Kolkata, July 27 Alarmed at the worsening situation in Darjeeling, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has sought the Centre’s help to resolve the issue.

Bhattacharjee met External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday to discuss the issue. “We talked about the situation in the Hills. I will take up the matter with the union home secretary,” Mukherjee said after the meeting.

Urban Development Minister Ashok Bhattacharya said the state government was yet to hear from the Centre about the tripartite talks between the state government, the Centre and the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM).

The GJM, meanwhile, organised a huge funeral procession in the Hills on Sunday, carrying the body of one of its woman member, who was shot dead on July 25. The morcha declared Pramila Sharma (38) as the first martyr of the GJM’s movement for Gorkhaland.

Morcha leaders said the Martyrs’ Day would be observed in the memory of 1,200 people killed during the Gorkhaland movement between 1986 and 1988.

“We observed Martyrs’ Day today. Our agitation will continue till we get the Gorkhaland,” Bimal Gurung, president of GJM, told The Indian Express.

Gurung also announced a compensation of Rs 1.5 lakh for the family of Sharma.

All three hill sub-divisions — Kalimpong, Kurseong and Darjeeling Sadar — observed two hours bandh during the procession.
