Kolkata, March 4 Students at the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital today did not attend their classes to protest against the alleged police action against their fellow companions on Monday.

Two students — Bitan Kumar Dutta of 4th year and Manik Rajwar of 3rd year— were injured during yesterday’s police lathicharge and are currently recuperating in the emergency department of the hospital.

The students belonging to Medical College Democratic Students Association (MCDSA) were protesting against the college authorities for the alleged irregularities going on in the hostel.

Today morning, a section of the students boycotted classes and agitated at the main academic building. The students also boycotted their practical classes.

“A section of the students boycotted classes but emergency and other wards funtioned normally. Patients’ care was not hampered. We will talk to the agitating students soon. They want us to cancel the admission of 27 students in the main hostel, which is not fair,” said Anup Roy, Vice-Principal-cum-Hospital Superintendent.

Meanwhile, the agitating students called off their boycott late in the evening.

They, however, stated that their agitation would continue till the authorities scrap the plans of “forcing” the entry of 27 new boarders to the main hostel.

“Our agitation will continue. The authorities are turning a deaf ear to our demands. We want the authorities to bring out the boardership status for all hostels and cancel allotments of these 27 students. At every hostel students are occupying seats illegally,” said Soumya Kanti Saha, a medical student and convenor of the MCDSA.

According to students, it all started when 27 new students claimed admission at the main hostel.

Students of the main hostel, mainly members of the MCDSA, protested citing that there is lack of space and that these 27 students, all of who are SFI members, were already residing at other hostels.

The police resorted to lathicharge when they gheraoed the hostel dean, Professor P K Dasgupta on Monday.
