New Delhi, March 7: In further hardening of Left stand, CPI on Friday warned the government of withdrawl of support if it goes ahead with the Indo-US nuclear deal.

“Should the government decide to push ahead with the deal, we will not and cannot be a party to go along with it. We will then be left with no other option than to withdraw our support to the government,” CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan said in a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

This is the first time a Left party supporting the government from outside has officially written to the Prime Minister threatening withdrawal of support though Left leaders have been making tough statements ever since September when the 123 Agreement was finalised.

CPI, which has 10 members in the Lok Sabha, is part of the CPI(M)-led Left Front that commands the backing of 59 members which is crucial to the government.

Bardhan’s missive comes a day after stiff deadline set by CPI(M) to the government to convene a meeting of the UPA-Left Committee on the nuclear deal by March 15 to discuss issues in the wake of US “pressures” to implement the deal.

He criticised Prime Minister’s statements in Parliament on the issue, including his appeal to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to rise above party interests saying “it is an open effort at canvassing BJP’s supoprt for the deal”.

“Your talk of trying to build a consensus sounds hollow when you are fully aware that no such consensus is possible -- a fact revealed in the Parliamentary debate itself,” the CPI veteran said.

Now commies says that their win in Tirupura shows that entire India is against US-India nuclear deal. What a forward line of thinking???!!! Only god can save them

Communist Traitors by Bipin Prasad on 08 Mar 2008

This is indeed an opprtunity to rise to the occasion and work in India's best interest. Communist party members and officials have shown to be traitors and acting against India's efforts. I will be really disappointed if BJP does not rise above politics and work thru the difference with Congress and come out in support of nuclear deal.

Commies' Ideas by Ashok Mehdiratta on 08 Mar 2008

it is not the first time that communists have shown that their loyalties are not with India.Shiela Dixit has stated that openly. We need development and progress. We need to go into election mode and give clear majority to one party and let the country progress(Both BJP or Cong are acceptable)

Nuclear power and U S by Kishore Patil on 08 Mar 2008

I'm not a commie. But I oppose this nuclear deal with U S just because of the fact that U S is not a reliable ally. They just use other countries for thier own good. You people are ignotants. You all forgot about the U S backed Tarapur nuclear power plant and how they pulled the plug. Wake up Indians! Get educated!

Nuclear Power Plants by Bhaswati Roy on 08 Mar 2008

Congress Party should not have formed an alliance with the left parties in the first place. How can water and oil mix? Historically, Congress is a nationalist party and the leftists are opportunists. They opposed introduction of computers in the bank in the early sixties. They did not want to a be part of the global alliance to fight against Fascism during the second world war, calling it a war between imperialists. They changed thier stance overnight when Soviet Russia was attacked by Hitler's Germany. They did not hesitate to call Subhas Bose a quisling. Interestengly, after a few years they would apologize and state that "we were wrong in our assessments at that time". This is their pattern. Last but not the least, what role did the leftists play in India's struggle for independence? Zip, a big Zero! Under their rule the developmental clock in West Bengal has been moving backward for the past 30 years. Nuclear plants will produce more energy which India needs for its development. I hope that the people of India will give a befitting reply to the left parties in the next general election.

To add to my comments below, I am in US, and watching there current Presendtial race, no one is talking about expanding Nuclear Power, All are talking Solar Energy, Wind Energy, Geothermal Energy which will indirectly create millions of Job. Germany has already decided to shut down all its Nuclear reactors. Then why should we pursue in opposite direction and that too given the internal security system we have. Every year we here about bombings in trains buses etc. Do we want to add ATOM in front of BOMB. As a matter of fact there is a big concern in US on Nuclear waste and how to deal with it. If advanced countries are having this problem, how are we going to deal with it. Please read the analysis from various Indian scientiest and it will be an eye opener.

High Tech by karat on 08 Mar 2008

You are True. And also dont forget we have gas energy called the human gobar gas, which is in cities of Mumbai. We need to tap all this gas energy and make it useful fire up for our next nano technology called the Nano Humanwaist gobar gas power.

As there are mixed signals on Nuclear Deal, a detail analysis should be done and in a transparent manner. Afer all we don't want India be another BASKET FOR NUCLEAR WASTE DUMP.

Communists of India by Syamasundara prasad Turaga on 07 Mar 2008

Dear editor, it is height of mokery. It is always the blind behavior of our comrades who brlieve in non progressive methodologies and refuge to see through the latest in politics. Our communists are neither followers of Russia or China but a typical band wagon of non progressive system. God only can convence them. It is better to leave them alone and not to bother about them. It is a pity.

CPM's Warning by Sairam Ramswamy on 07 Mar 2008

Barking Dogs don’t …….., Don’t worry my CPM friends will always have a compromise plan and you can say whatever you want. Like how you were against computerisation and now every CPM leaders walks 1 or more laptops.CPM will continue its piggy back ride and Congress will complete full term.

CPM's Warning by Varinder Sarin on 07 Mar 2008

Can CPM quote Warning Number or it is another method adopted for getting invited to a dinner meeting? Spit and lick is the manifesto of CPM and as a matter of fact CPM is trying to divert public attention from the main issues "Nandigram" and China's claim on Indian territory. If PM,Sonia and UPA alleis has an iota of shame, they should discard CPM's crutches and better walk lamely than walking with borrowed crutches with guilty conscience.
