Kolkata, May 4 CPM cadres and SUCI activists clashed at Sonachura in Nandigram on Sunday. According to sources, crude bombs and guns were used in the clash.

SUCI members claimed that two of its members, who were injured in the clash, could not be taken out of Gokulnagar village for treatment as CPM cadres had blocked the route.

According to the police, trouble started around 12.30 pm. “There were explosions in Gokulnagar and gunfire in Prafullanagar,” a police officer said.

East Midnapore district SP S Panda said violence had increased in Nandigram in the run-up to the Panchayat elections, and blamed the political parties for holding unauthorised public meetings in the area.

“No party is informing or taking requisite permission from Nandigram police station about their plans to hold rallies and meetings. We haven’t received any information regarding casualties,” he added.

Nandigram SUCI leader Bhawani Pathak blamed the CPM cadres for the violence. “With the polls drawing near, the CPM is resorting to intimidation and criminal methods in a bid to gain mileage and dominate the election process.,” he added. East Midnapore will vote on May 11 during the first phase of the elections.
