Party should re consider the speaker the reason is he is a senior politican and apart from that we the CPM party will loose our strength, but what he as done is a mistake. Our party should strengthen day to day and the day which comes to us is the day what we have succesed and if that happens only it means to say that we are truly working to strengthen our party. My opinion is when ever we are supporting the other parties to form the government even we have to become the cabinet ministers, particullarly we have to choose the important coates which will be help full to hely the labour class peoples, etc. I want to improve our party in my place that is KGFin Karanataka state but there are no efficient leaders to lead the role and they are spoiling the entire activites, so my suggestion is to strengthen the party the national leaders have to visit our place and give a proper training to our caders to strengthen our party. I belive this will happen immediately and proper action tobe taken..

What are the achievements in his 40 political years? What did he contribute to INDIA? There is no-one to discuss about our unsung heroes (soldiers, generals, field marshals) instead they waste discussing about a politician; first respect the dignified soulsWhy there is so much hype about this person?Quick fact:He held an office of profit as Chairman of Santiniketan Sriniketan Development Authority (SSDA); when Opposition demanded his resignation; he argued that since he did not profit from the office, the demand was baseless; this shows his personality/ traits

Sacking of Speaker by Anant on 24 Jul 2008

In UK the speaker has to resign from his party before he can take up the job. The speaker is highly respected by all irrespective of party colours. A speaker is never never asked to resign from his job as a speaker by any party. I don't know the rules in India but it seems very strange for a party to sack him before his end of the term. Again who knows what rules these comrades follow since they don't believe in Indian constitution? Comrades may have the authority under their rules to sack him but they can't ask him to resign from his job. Speaker was selected by all parties before hand and he must finish his term.

Leaders or followers by v on 24 Jul 2008

The issue debated was of national importance. It is a democracy and MP's should be able to vote based on their conscience rather than by some "Whip" or inducements etc. It is strange to see that even though the speaker may have done what is good for the office of speaker and or his conscience, he is thrown out of the party!! In other words individual freedom or thought has no respect. Respect is only commanded by people WHO FOLLOW and NOT LEAD. I can see great leaders emerging in this country.

Somnath deserves this by krishan rastogi on 24 Jul 2008

i as an intellectual fail to understand, what wrong has been done by CPM. This is what Somnath Chatterjee has been saying all along. Speaker does not belong to any party. and CPM has simply ensured this. When our PM has brought the level of the debate to its nadir by saying replying to Leader of Opposition is a waste of time, Speaker could not reprimand him what nonsense he is talking. He is duty bound to reply to Leader Of Opposition. That is basic tenet of parliamentary democracy. The PM is answerable to the parliament. Why no media has taken a very strong objection to this. Now if opposition also says asking a question from govt. is a waste of time. Then what the Speaker is going to convene the parliament for. For passing bills on the strength of cash payments to MPs for each bill. Why media are not raising their voice. or the media has also been managed. Parliament belongs to me, it is not a property of PM, Speaker and MPs and I will not allow anybody to misuse and abuse it. Let us all resolve this. A nuclear deal can not be bigger than the country. Krishan

PM did not respond by Anant on 24 Jul 2008

Oh dear oh dear what an intellectual is Kishan Rastogi? Was he sleeping when PM tried to speak and the BJP hecklers will not allow him to speak. If you are BJP follower then spend time on finding ways to clean BJP of heckling like in a fish market, clean their politics of division, clean their leaders like Avani,VK Malhotra, Rajnath of not fouling the parliament with abuse and personal attacks. Teach BJP to discuss issues and not personalities. Teach BJP spokepersons like Rudy,Prakash etc etc to answer directly to the questions asked by interviewers and not heckle and only say what they know. These people are total waste of time. Such spokepersons give bad name to their party and insult Indian intelligence. GOOD LUCK.

No forgive and forget by arun on 24 Jul 2008

Mr Somnath Chaterjee may have functioned exceptionally well as a speaker but when it came for him to choose between his party and post he should have chosen to follow the party line or else he should have resigned. In Hindu mythology the character of Vibhishan is shown as an honest, upright and a pious man. But despite his qualities he is always known as a GHAR KA BHEDI and no mother has even named her son as Vibhishan. Somnath Chaterjee has betrayed his party and it is a crime for which there can not be a forgive and forget in this case

Somath's explusion by rajmohan k on 24 Jul 2008

Somanath's reason for not resigning from his post as Speaker, as Somanath himself declared it, is not because he wants to respect Indian constitution and/or support congress, but it is just because he does not want to vote along with 'communal' BJP! Here so many people tried to make him a hero for defying his party dictates. How conveniently those people forget Somath's opportunistic and utterly contradicting logics that he is above party lines, impartial, and at the same time he can public declare that I am against BJP idology and so I cannot vote along with BJP? If is 'impartial' how dare he publicly accuse a national party this way? Can someone answer this? Or is it just because of your love for this Italian Congress who is looting all the wealth of the country, who has reserved all national wealth to minorities as first climants, that anybody doing anything against all other parties and support this Italian congress is right, and such people are heros?

Somnathj Chaatarjee by MOHAN DADDIKAR on 24 Jul 2008

By defying the instructions of his party and indirectly siding with the Congress, Somanathjee has made his future career bright. The Congress may reward him for his rebellion against the leftists, by appointing him as Governer of some state or President in future.

Who's who by chanakya on 24 Jul 2008

Right from the day the Left with drawn support, things are happening as never before. Firstly, this is the first time the foreign policy is debated more out side Lok sabha than in amidst Parliament members. People with out positions have taken over the initiative from law makers and forced the course of action. How does one explain the Rajya members walking upto President and decalring with drawl of support. Is it the way the duly elected members perform their duties ? Then we see leaders who are not members of any house coming to Capital and do lobbying for and against the government. The powerful out side forces have tried to dictate the terms to duly elected Lok sabha and law makers of this country. Ultimately we see a senior member has been thrown out with out any mention to his years of service to the party and parliament. A fit case of dictatorship and is guideline for things to come in future if they come to power by nay means.

SOMANATH CHATTERJEE by E SREEVALSAN on 24 Jul 2008

INFACT MR SOMANATH CHATTERJEE FORGOT HIS ROOTS. THANKLESS PERSON. I CANNOT BELIVE SUCH A MATURED MAN JUST GO WITH POSITION. HE SPOILED HIS GREATENESS JUST FOR A POSITION AND WE KNOW THE MORALITY OF OUR POLITICIANS AND INDIAN POLITICS. POOR CHATTERJEE. HE WILL REALISE IT ONE DAY. HIS ANSWER FOR THIS WAS ANOTHER BIG JOKE. HE CANNOT VOTE ALOMGWITH BJP. IS THEIR ANY MEANING FOR THIS .? HIS PARTY WAS OPPOSING NUCLEAR DEAL. THE TRUST VOTE WAS FOR THAT. IF SOMEBODY WANTS TO OPPOSES, LET THEM OPPOSE. MR CHATTERJEE , I CANNOT BELIVE THIS WAS EARLIER CHATTERGEE. SOMETHING HAPPENED.HE ONLY KNOWS???!!!BUT VERY VERY SHAMEFUL INCIDENT.

He asked for It by jason on 24 Jul 2008

Somnath, probably, thought that he was above his party. He forgot that he is in the present position only because of his party. I dont think that anyone should shed tears for him; he must have already organised his rehabilitation with help from the likes of Amar Singh.

Somnath is a great gambler ... by Manoj on 24 Jul 2008

Somnath da is an astute politician. At 79, he has achieved whatever Left Parties can provide. The only thing remaining is being the President. This move is the best thing he could do and wait for Congress to come to power again. He's a strong contender for the next President.

Karat vs. Somnath by Sahadevan on 24 Jul 2008

It is the personal ego of Prakash Karat that is responsible for all the problems with the left. Karat is more a communist theory man and lacks political experience.

expelsion of Speaker Somnath Chatterjee by josejoseph on 24 Jul 2008

It was most unfortunate for the CPI(M) Politbureau to expel Speaker Somanath Chatterjee from the Party. Those who have watched Indian Politics during the last four decades know how able a Parliamentarian Somanath Chatterjee was. As champion of the common man and working class, Somnath Chatterjee waged fierce battles in the Parliament. He was one of the most effective voice of the opposition during the Authoritarian Indira Gandhi regime. As the Speaker of the house, he is expected to be impartial. His responsibility was to conduct the proceedings of the house free and fair when an issue of atmost national impotance arose, and he did it admirably. He was very respectful towards all the members of house eventhough most of them did not reciprocate such respect towards the chair. And nobody can blame Speaker Somanath Chattejee if he had favored the proposd Atomic Energy Pact with USA. Most Indians favour the UPA Govt on this issue and trust the patriotism of our Prime Minister.

There are 543 MPs in the Lok Sabha. Of them 117 have been charged and are being investigated for murder, rape, assault, extortion and robbery. [When the current Lok Sabha was constituted, Outlook had listed as many as 100 way back in 2004 --Ed] Nineteen MPs have more than three criminal cases pending against them. Twenty-nine have been accused of spouse abuse. Seven have been arrested for fraud. Seventy-one cannot get credit or loans due to bad credit histories. Twenty-one are current defendants in various lawsuits. Eighty-four were involved in offences and made to pay fines. These are the people who make our laws. They are the people who rule us.

The Party Whip by Hardik on 24 Jul 2008

Somnath Da's unceremonious dismissal from the primary membership of the CPM is indeed very shocking. The leftists have again proved they only beleive in being prisoners of a lost world. The call to choose between ones conscience and the party line had to be made, and I am glad Somnath Chatterjee made the right call. Unlike scores of other politicians he chose to upheld the dignity of the house and discharge his responsibility as the Speaker of the august house. It is perhaps time to pass legislation where by Party Whip's must be made illegal, once a person is a duly elected Member of Parliament his or her free will cannot be subject to a political organizations dictats, this tatamounts to supression of basic freedoms, and only free men and women can help us get some good out of the Indian Parliament. Members of Parliament must be freed from the tether of their party whips, there is no place for the whip in democrasy and certainly not the ideological one.

CPMs birthday gift to Somanath Chatterjee by chiranjiv on 24 Jul 2008

Why am not surprised at the scalled CPM aging party tops who can never really get the basis of democracy. When a person is elected a speaker..he is "no party" MP AND NEUTRAL and doesnot owe allegiance to any party. The CPM is ill advised and frustrated that Congress succeeeded in surviving the vote whatever means it used to that end.
