Coimbatore, March 30: The CPI-M said it was not in favour of cobbling a ‘cut and paste’ third front for elections, but wanted to establish a long term political alternative to the Congress and BJP.

"Our stand is non-Congress and anti-BJP. We do not subscribe to the stand of equidistant from Congress and BJP, as we think communalism is big threat to integrity and unity of the country," Politburo member Sitaram Yechury told reporters here on the sidelines of the 19th party congress.

Elaborating on third alternative, he said this would be formed based on three policies -- opposing communalism, opposing "anti-people content of economic reforms" and opposing all efforts to make India a subordinate ally of US imperialism.

"This is not merely an electoral front. Differences between a front and alternative is that the former is a cut and paste job for elections. We are working on an alternative, which is for the long term and is built on a policy framework," he said.

However, he said both the Congress and BJP subscribed to the neo-liberal economic policies and are making India a strategic ally of US imperialism.

"But there is a very strong opinion in the ongoing party Congress on combating communalism and keeping such forces away from the State power," Yechury said.

On the party's stand in Karnataka polls, he said "our priority will be to defeat the communal forces, which have started creating polarisation after coming to power, thanks to JD (S)."

Asked whether CPI-M will support the Congress in Karnataka he said "let us see how the situation develops."
