Kolkata, July 4 In one of the first public meetings after the CPM-led Left Front suffered a setback in the municipal polls, Politburo member and industries minister Nirupam Sen admitted that the party has lost touch with the common people.

The minister, who was inaugurating the 32nd annual state conference of the SFI on Friday, urged the youth to reach out to more people.

“Our rivals are making efforts to create a gap between the masses and us and to a certain extent they have been successful,” said the minister. Insisting that the union should play a larger role in society from now on, Sen said it is the SFI’s responsibility to relate to those who are not opting for higher education.

The students representatives in each block need to talk to the people and find out the problems they are facing and then take up the matter to the higher functionaries.

The minister said it is the responsibility of the students to take the issue of the nuclear deal to the masses. “To generate 20,000 mega watt of thermal or hydel power, an investment of Rs 60,000 crore is required, whereas the nuclear power needs an initial investment of Rs 2,50,000 crore,” he said.

He added that India has vast reserves of thorium and scientists might use it to derive energy, but this would no longer be possible if the deal is signed.

The minister accused the US of deliberately trying to create a unipolar world by pushing the deal through. Sen said the supporters of the deal have been misleading the people.

The minister did not spare the UPA government on the issue of price rise. He said that the Left has been constantly opposing the policies of successive governments since the early 90s and now the situation has reached such a state that the government cannot control the inflation.

The three-day conference of the SFI, which is being held in Howrah, was attended by around 660 delegates and observers from the state. CPM parliamentarian Hannan Mollah and Howrah district secretary Sridip Bhattacharya were present at the inaugural session.
