New Delhi, February 21: The declaration of independence by Serbia’s Kosovo province has become the latest weapon for the CPI(M) to attack the UPA government supported by it.

The Left party is not happy with the “ambiguous stand” taken by India on the 'breakup' of Serbia and saw in it the influence of the US.

CPI(M) slammed the Government for merely stating that New Delhi was studying the evolving situation in Serbia as there are “several legal issues” involved in the declaration.

The UPA government not coming out against the “blatant violation” of national sovereignty by Kosovo speaks a lot about its “predilections”.

“On no major issue of international significance, does the government want to appear to be in dissonance with the United States,” an editorial in the forthcoming issue of party mouthpiece ‘People’s Democracy’ said.

“At least on such a vital issue as the sovereignty of countries with minority populations and the challenges to a basic principle of international law, India should speak up,” it noted.

The article, which claims that US administration’s policies encouraged carving out of “protectorates”, noted that Washington has declared its intention to recognise the new Kosovo state.

The CPI(M)’s latest jibe at the government comes against the backdrop of its attack on the UPA’s what it called “pro-US” foreign policy in the last four years.

The nuclear deal with the US has also come in handy for the Left party to attack the Manmohan Singh administration.

The editorial noted that apart from China and Russia, Asian countries like Indonesia and Sri Lanka, which are also facing separatist demands, have opposed Kosovo’s move.

“India having faced a number of secessionist demands since independence, should have been categorical on this blatant violation of national sovereignty and the brazen use of force to redraw territorial boundaries,” it said.

India, too should have come out with a clear statement against the breakup of Serbia, the party said and criticised the External Affairs Ministry’s comments that New Delhi was of the view that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries should be fully respected.

“If that is so, it applies to Serbia too. Then why is the government taking shelter behind studying the ‘serious legal issues,” it asked.

It noted that the US, Britain, France, Germany have declared their intention to recognise the new state while countries like Greece, Spain, Cyprus, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Romania have opposed it.

On Kosovo’s move, the editorial said, the “latest act of imperialist imprudence, the creation of a NATO protectorate in the Balkans does not augur well for peace and stability in the region”.

Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia earlier this week in the final fallout from the conflict-strewn breakup of the former Yugoslavia.

Free Kosova by bluerose799 on 26 Mar 2008

http://www.hartford-hwp.com/archives/62/094.htmlI can’t comprehend how a minority of 7% of the population, pretend to take off the land, the language, culture and the life of the rest of Kosova. Kosovars have the right to live free and independent in their land where they are born, generation after generation, live and will die.

freaking commies by vishal on 22 Feb 2008

You can count upon the commies to be at the opposite end of whatever is sane. Someone kill them all already. Their nuisence is not amusing any more. Oh and India and USA will always be on the same side because that is what is sane. That is what makes sense. That is what the new power arrangment is. The commies would much rather hand deliver us to China. Have they no shame ? They are talking about Kosovo but how do they explain their deafening silence when china told the PM that he cannot visit Arunachal because Arunachal belongs to china ? WTF ?

kosovo by triven on 22 Feb 2008

Govt should immediately recognise. Forget about left parties they are real useless people in india

Kosovo indepndeny by S kant on 22 Feb 2008

UPA Govt. should not worries about left party and support Kosovo indepent. This is will of people which is supported by whole world. Left parties are in power where everything is hopeless.

Kosovo by Megh on 22 Feb 2008

We should not support Kosovo'sindependence, not because the Commies say so. If we do, we will open a whole lot of pandora's box starting with J

comrades by srirengs on 22 Feb 2008

Will the Comrades also talk about their idol country China, stating that Arunachal is theirs and our PM is not to visit. Karat had earlier stated that India should not join with US to ensure that China is not affected. Patriosim thy name is Karat!!

Idiots by Shantanu V.Soman on 22 Feb 2008

These idiots should worry about West Bengal first and then talk about Kosovo. The media is giving undue importance to these anti-nationals

Kosovo by Hriday on 22 Feb 2008

India should not recognise Kosovo as an independent country. We must support our Serbian friends not the Albanian thugs in Kosovo.Kosvovo is part of Serbia.End of story.

CPM incensed by Pankaj on 22 Feb 2008

CPI-M is a bunch of thugs, preying on illiterate and semi literate people. These arm chair revolutionaries should be exposed and decimated ruthlessly like in Malaysia.

India and its neighbours by RJ on 22 Feb 2008

Ignore these useless commies. There is no need for India to rush to a knee jerk reaction to Kosovo or any other international incident. Let's take a stand on any issue purely based on our self interest, in our own time frame. If it suits us not take any decision, let's not take any. If it suits us to change our position, let's change it. The golden rule is to take any decision in favor of India's self interest only. There is no need to take any decision based on Russia, US, China or some "principles." Let's revise our stand on China's occupation of Tibet and the status of Taiwan as an independent country. Let's develop strong military ties with Japan, South Korea and Vietnam. Let's play the emerging power game between China and US to our best advantage. We need to prepare a 100 year master plan to strengthen Tibetan people's aspirations for independence so that they will be an independent country one day. Why? Because it is in our interest to have a friendly buffer country between us and an increasingly aggressive China. We also need to prepare a 20 year covert master plan to weaken Pakistan in every way. In contrast to what everyone says, a strong Pakistan is NOT in India's self interest. A weak Pakistan, dependent on India for its economic survival is in India's interest. That's the kind of proactive foreign policy India needs; not the chamcha policy of the past 60 years.

I hate agreeing with anybody. I think I am the smartest one in this forum ;) I guess I will simply have to swallow my pride and agree with you. Well said. Surprisingly, I agree with every single point you have made. Having said that, I have to emphasize, I don't care for the Congress. I am an ardent BJP supporter and I will stay so for life!

India and Kosovo by Philip on 22 Feb 2008

"What are the CPI (M)'s views on China playing games regarding Arunachal Pradesh? What are it's views on China getting closer to Nepal and Pakistan? Are we shameless as Indians? Do parties matter over nationalism? Shame on all of us that put politics above national interests!"India seems to never notice its giant neighbor creeping upon her steps and looks the other way. Chinese influence is to great, India needs to support a free tibet, China never bordered India! If India recognizes this there goes JK and Nagaland. Soon random states like Orissa and Goa will break off too. One weak link in the chain destroies the chain. India must oppose this.

Kosovo by Raj on 21 Feb 2008

I don't support commies but if India recognised Kosovo then think for repercussions it will have on India. Tommorrow militants participate in elections in J

Recognition of kosovo by raj on 21 Feb 2008

It just looks that my comments are being edited. My comment was that if militants supporters win in Nagaland and JK who can stop them from declaring independence

Let see, how commies handle it by Dr. Gautam on 21 Feb 2008

Sometimes not taking a decision is a good decision. Kosova has become a tussle point between anti-communist western nations and procommunist other nations. Those who are recognizing and those who are blocking recognition are either in one camp (pro and anti-commi) unambiguously. India's situation is different, it has friendly relations with US as well as Russia. So, it is in India's interest to be silent and recognize Kosova only when UN recognizes it. As far as Congress is concerned, it is a good opportunity for them to beat Indian commies with a bamboo stick. Congress should spread propaganda that we are ready to not recognize Kosova (as commies are demanding in media), but actually it is Indian commies who wants to recognize it as Kosova is going to be a new Muslim state in the heart of Europe. Let see, how commies handle it.

Dishonest all the way down the Commies of Inida by Harbhajansingh Avtar on 21 Feb 2008
