Mumbai, March 18 After almost 66 years, the Central Railway will run trains between Kalyan and Igatpuri at high speed. On Monday, the restriction on high speed that was in force at several locations of this section since 1942, was relaxed after the approval of commissioner of railway safety.

During the annual inspection this morning, all stations and facilities in this section — tracks, railway bridges and tunnels — were surveyed. A train each from both Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and Igatpuri stations departed at 6.20 am and 9.20 am respectively for the inspection. Central Railway General Manager Soumya Raghvan and all principal heads of departments conducted the inspection.

“The improvement work on the tracks was on. The restriction on speed that was in force on 17 locations was today relaxed after permission was granted by Commissioner of Railway Safety Sudhir Kumar,” said JN Lal, divisional railway manager.

Lal added that the speed on turnover and crossover of tracks has now been increased to 25 kmph from 10 kmph.

Such exercises are done annually to inspect the condition of tracks, bridges, tunnels and facilities for passengers at stations as per guidelines of the Railway Board. After Soumya Raghvan took charge as the GM, inspection of Nagpur, Bhusawal, Solapur and Pune stations have also been done.

Talking about passenger amenities, Lal said, “There are 40 categories of passenger amenities. Out of these, 30 will be completed by March 31 at the Mumbai Division of CR. Also, 142 automatic ticket validating machines have been installed at 32 stations.”

He added that on Titwala (West) side, a booking office has been started on Sunday.

“Apart from this, at Asangaon, a booking office at the foot overbridge has been renovated and it would be opened from tomorrow,” he added.
