The three-day carnival that ended on Wednesday was held on the College Street campus and was open for all students of CU. About 20 companies participated in the carnival, including HSBC, Wipro, Aviva insurance, NIIT, IBM, Orion call tech, ICICI and HDFC.
Several companies conducted on-the-spot interviews in the university library building and made spot offers to students while few preferred to have the last round of interviews at their respective offices. “I speak for a lot of my fellow students when I say that a lot of us feel very relieved after getting a job,” said Poulomi Dasgupta, who has bagged a job offer from Wipro.
With an intake capacity of over one lakh students per year, CU does not yet have a placement cell with a placement officer in any of the campuses.
hus, the career carnival was a big step forward and a boon to many students. More than a thousand students visited the carnival for inquiries and at the end of the third day various companies recruited 134 students.
“The carnival has been very successful and we intend to make it a bigger success next year,” said Payal Dutta Choudhury, one of the organisers.
The average packages offered ranged between Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.5 lakh.
The students union at the economics department campus (Kantakal campus) has been arranging placements for the past few years. As rolling placements are still on, out of 220 post-graduate students, 40 students have already bagged jobs with various companies with an average salary package of Rs 3 lakh per annum.
“I am proud of the way the students have organised the job carnival. I am certain that the university will have a placement cell with an officer by April this year,” said Registrar S K Bandyopadhyay.
When asked why the authorities had not taken any initiative in all these years, he said: “I have taken the initiative during my tenure and thus cannot comment any further.”
