The post-graduate students got annoyed when they came to collect their examination forms and found out that 97 out of 197 students had been declared dis-collegiate on grounds of insufficient attendance.
“Earlier there had been no notification of low attendance,” said a student.
“The notice has come at a time when it is not even possible to make up for the attendance. Taking to task so many students without any prior notice is extremely unfair,” said Madhuja Sen Roy, Zilla Committee President, Students Federation India (SFI).
Ardhendu Bhattacharya, Assistant Secretary (Arts), said that any decision would be taken only once the V-C is back from an out-station trip. “The students do not have sufficient attendance and it is obvious that necessary steps will be taken against them. There has never been any practice of notifying the students in advance about their attendance,” said Bhattacharya.
A minimum attendance of 65 per cent is required for a student to be declared collegiate. Those students, who have between 55 and 65 per cent of attendance are termed as non-collegiate and can appear for examinations on payment of a fine of Rs 50. The students scoring below 55 per cent of attendance are not allowed to appear in the examinations.
