Kolkata, August 08 For all those who dread moving out of their homes there is good news! Commuting in Kolkata is to become enjoyable, as swanky air-conditioned radio taxis hit the streets. Christened the “Kolkata Cab”, the fleet of this new addition to Kolkata streets will offer a host of unique facilities.

A venture of Orix Auto Infrastructure Services Limited (OAIS), the fleet of around 100 taxis was flagged off by state Transport Minister Subhas Chakraborty in Kolkata today.

The unique feature in these cabs is a distress button connected to the Kolkata Police headquarters at Lalbazar, , which will be installed in the cabs. This feature will come handy in case of an emergency.

With the introduction of the “Kolkata Cab”, it will be time to say goodbye to rude taxi drivers and long queues. A call to the nationwide local numbers 44-222-222 and 44-333-222 will ensure that the cab is at one’s doorstep within 15 minutes.

The cab will also provide the option of paying through credit cards. So, you need not worry even if you have forgotten your wallet at home or have run out of cash.

Last but not the least, the fares have been pegged at a pocket-friendly Rs 15 per kilometre. The firm, which introduces the cab in Kolkata, has claimed that a tamper-proof electronic fare meter has been installed in the cab for smooth and transparent transaction.

Pathetic experience with Kolkata cab by Sandip Saha on 11 Oct 2009

My experience with kolkata cab: Today morning I called Kolkata cab at aroun 8:30am to book a cab from palta to howrah station at 6:00 pm. One call center lady pick up the call and told me "let me verify weather taxi is available or not". After verifying she booked a cab for me and I asked about the charges she told it is Rs15 per KM.At around 2:30 pm I got a call from Kolkata cab one call center lady told me that they are sorry that no cab is available ,when I told but you people booked the cab after verifying the availability of cab. Then the lady told me at that time it was available now it is booked otherwise i have to pay RS 20 per km. Now I am asking what type of service they are providing once they are committed they should respect there commitment. It was my first time and I have this bad experience with them. So before going for Kolkata CAB please keep in mind that they can cancel your booking at any time, they are not reliable.
