Kolkata, May 13 The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday upheld the life sentence of four convicts including Basab Rambabu, a railway contractor at Kharagpur, who was convicted for his involvement in the Manas Choubey murder case in Kharagpur.

Manas Choubey, son of late Narayan Choubey, former CPI MP, was killed in his shop in front of his wife Hema on June 27, 1999 at Kharida under Kharagpur police station.

According to the FIR lodged by Hema, about nine youths had entered Choubey’s shop that day and after a scuffle, one of them opened fire on him.

Delivering the final verdict, the Division Bench also upheld the life sentence of other three convicts, Babu Roy, Sunil Sharma and K Shiva, but acquitted K China and Suresh Singh, convicted under the arms act, on grounds that they have already served the period of imprisonment.

The Bench also acquitted H N Pandey and Rajib Singh from all other charges and said that the duo might be released if they were not convicted in other criminal cases. Also within a year of this incident, Gautam Choubey, brother of Manas, was also allegedly killed the aides of Rambabu.

Following which he was arrested from Hyderabad in 2001 and convicted for the same. The appeal for the case is still pending before a Division Bench of the High Court.
