Chennai, February 4: The demand for a fresh alignment without disturbing 'Ram Sethu' in implementing the Sethu Samuthram Shipping Canal Project (SSCP) was a 'conspiracy' to stall it and prevent development in the southern parts of the country, DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi said in Chennai on Monday.

Referring to PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss's remarks in this regard, the Chief Minister said he had earlier expressed the view that an alternative alignment should be found. However, officials had stated that it was not possible as 60 per cent of the works on it had already been completed.

Pointing out that the present alignment was selected after studying the possibilities of the six proposed, he said experts had also opined that the project could be implemented only with the present alignment.

"Opposing the project after 60 per cent of the works have already been completed is a conspiracy to stall the project", he said in an article in the DMK mouthpiece Murasoli.

The Chief Minister said none had objected to the project, quoting ram sethu, when surveys were conducted earlier.

"Those opposing it now did not do so when the project work started," he said.
