Hayden was let off with just a reprimand by Cricket Australia for the comment on Brisbane radio and the local media defended it saying it was neither rude nor racist.
"Matthew Hayden was charged for simply saying what most Australians feel about Harbhajan Singh. What is wrong with calling Harbhajan an obnoxious little weed? It's not racist, it's not all that rude and it's certainly not bad for the game," The Daily Telegraph wrote.
The Australian newspaper only described Hayden's comments as ‘foolish’ for openly expressing ‘what many in the Australian team think about Harbhajan. While it was meant to be a light-hearted radio interview, Hayden's lack of diplomacy has poured petrol on a bushfire and has given the Indians something substantial to complain about’.
Melbourne's Herald Sun made a scathing attack on Harbhajan, though it also made the point that Hayden was no angel.
"It's no surprise Harbhajan Singh is right in the middle of the latest storm. He is a despised character in the Australian dressing room, but it doesn't bother the fiery spinner. He thrives in this combustible atmosphere. While it's not always clear whose side of the story to believe, Harbhajan is always entertaining listening," it wrote.
"It's also no surprise to find Matthew Hayden in the mix as well. Hayden is a notorious sledger, and has never backed away from airing his views on the field," the paper said.
Another article in the paper seemed to agree to the Indians' view that the world champions were angry that they have been paid in the same coin by the visitors.
"What India has shown this summer is that it is not afraid to expose any so-called on-field secrets. Many touring teams have come and left with their tails between their legs. India certainly hasn't, and, in some ways, Australia is not used to this. That's why the world champions sometimes react in anger when things don't go their way. The fuse has been lit. Bring on Sunday," the newspaper said urging the fans not to miss the potentially-explosive finals.
The newspaper counselled captain Ricky Ponting to play the role of statesman to prevent the situation going out of hand in the best-of-three title clash.
"If there is a fight on hand, he won't shy away from it. To a certain extent, that's what leadership is all about. Leadership, too, is about remaining calm and letting your actions tell the story. Ponting must learn to do this and encourage his men to follow, otherwise the tri-series finals will be lost. Match referee Jeff Crowe must also take control."
The Age said, "the bickering sets an unpleasant scene ahead of Sunday's first tri-series final. Already this summer there have been more controversies between the sides than any other tour in history."

GIMMIK OF INDIAN WEEDS AND AUS TRALIAN MONKEYS TO KEEP THE TOUR ENTERTAINING TO GENERATE MORE INCOME.
The ancestors of Aussies people were all the anti-socials and criminals who were thrown out from Britain to the barren island as punishment. Hence such behaviour with a guest player is quite normal for them. They only understand the language of tit for tat.
Girls touring as India's national team Spineless, thin skinned hearts as big as splitpeas threats to go home if things dont go your way.Good riddance Bitches
another Indian caught cheating again this time the captain - would Dhoni like to use a net rather than gloves??? cant catch and certainly cant bat Indians are the worst losers in the world - you should be used to losing by now
Have a proper perspective folks. Ishant broke the rules and was 'properly' penalised but taking his age and record into account. May be he is coming from the 'hungry, thirsty streets' of poor India, but cricketers from India are 'fabulously wealthy these days'. So ICC collected 15%. What is wrong in that ? Regarding Hayden, a 'Queenslander', is 'answerable to tradition', owing allegiance to the Queen, and hence was 'politely' given only a reprimand. How can ICC or CA or any gentleman for that matter ever punish the poor cricketers from Australia, who have more fighting spirits than their goodwill and actually queueing up to IPL for their daily bread and butter ? May be you are not brought up to be 'deferential towards Australians' but anyone can learn. The faster the better though... Cheers
2 wins from 9 games against Australia this tour, the Indian teams concern should be their poor performance not petty name calling.
So Mr Hayden is the spokesperson for the OZ team - and also CA, because they found him 'guilty' but did not even ask him to apologize. So the entire team and management feel it is OK to be abusive. The players hate the British team, the NZ team, the South African team, the Sri Lankan team, and the Indian team. They sure have a problem - they only like themselves!
I guess the Indian press should call Hayden a stinking Bear and rephrase it "as a honest foolish joke". Moreover the word "Hayden" does justify it as hay's den which normally stinks.
Then calling him "Uski Maki" is not bad either. So it is Australians going decide what is good and bad in public behavior now !! Of all the people we have Australians to do this.Morons they are disgusting ill mannered and not fit for any sport so to say..
What comment made against harbajan by symonds is bajji shoud not appriciate lee for his good spell in sytney test. why not the same remarks apply to symonds for his remarks over Isant in the odi.
OK then how bhajji's calling symonds a monkey was racist. This is what india has been saying, it is just a cultural difference dont try to make a big issue out of it..
ICC shall be tought too . It's India running them and still they are playing with Indian Players . We should teach them a Indian magic trick so they start to act-up
These reactions are instinctive and has no relevance and has to be overlooked.
I think this should be a lesson for Indian Media and people to get matured and standby Indians rather than pulling each other down.. Grow up India.. get selfish motives out of the way
If calling weeds is ok the 'ma ki' too should be as it is not racial or disparaging. It is an expression of aggression.
Hayden's comment that the Indian team is losing every match that is playing is unwarranted and more questionable.
I notice Indian players are being charged in New Zealand for their disgusting cricket behaviour, The world see India for what it is average cricketers who then blame others.
That's correct. A weed does not have any race even when 'qualified' as obnoxious. But whatever word the Indians can come up in response will be assigned a 'race' befitting to the word used. And will be 'penalised' too at the highest level. After all it's a gentleman's game; so it is the duty of the 'gentlemen' to apply the rules, is n't it ? Fair dinkum !
