Just as the 28-year-old was preparing to relaunch himself after an injury-marred sabbatical, in 2008's Nationals, he has been left surprised by Indian Boxing Federation's decision to make him a selector.
"I was surprised on being told that I have been made a selector. At first I thought my coach was joking when he broke the news to me. I thought I would compete this year (for the Railways) and test myself," he said.
"Par chalo dekhte hain (but let's see what I have to do). I haven't decided, I am still confused," added Qamar, whose last appearance at the Nationals was in 2006 in Hyderabad where he lost in the first round itself.
Qamar was made selector during Indian Boxing Federation's elections on Friday. The panel also has World Cup bronze medalist V Devarajan and 1962 Asian Games gold medalist Padam Bhadaur Mal.
The three-time national champion, who picked up a nagging nose injury soon after his 2002 Manchester Commonwealth gold, says he still has the power and motivation to compete. With the Indian Boxing Federation planning a pro-league, he is tempted to take the plunge.
"I know I have a career left in the ring. If at 27, Akhil Kumar can be a world class boxer, so can I who is just a year senior to him. I don't know what to do right now.”
