Kolkata, February 19 A police escort has been provided to a Madhyamik examinee at Amta in Howrah, following threats from her former tutor. The girl was threatened after she spurned the advances and a proposal for marriage by her tutor.

Bithika Bagui is a resident of Barua village in Howrah’s Amta police station area, said the police. She is at present appearing for the Madhyamik examination from the Amta High School.

Her parents lodged a complaint with the local police. “The girl’s parents said in the complaint that a person in her village was threatening her. Her family members felt insecure and asked for our help. We are investigating the case. Since the girl is a Madhyamik examinee and has to travel to the examination centre everyday, we have provided her with an escort,” said Neeraj Singh, Superintendent of Police, Howrah district.

According to family members, six months ago one Brijish Mal, a neighbour and teacher at the Barua Primary School, tutored Bithika. During that period, Mal fell in love with her and proposed marriage. She refused outright and her family protested.

However, yesterday, Mal visited her home late in the night and proposed once again. This time too, the family rejected his proposal.

Infuriated, Mal threatened to harm Bithika if he was spurned once again.

Her father Nirapada Bagui and uncle Sailen Bagui lodged a complaint with the Amta police station this morning. In their complaint they stated that Bithika and her family members fear she would be harmed on her way to the examination centre and asked for police protection.

Two constables provided for her security escorted her to the examination centre at Munshirhat Chintamoni High School and back home.
