According to officers, Avtar Singh, a resident of Behrampur village, complained that the groom refused to marry his daughter because he could not meet his family’s demands for dowry.
The incident took place earlier this week.
The groom, Jaswinder Singh, his father Ranjit Singh, mother Harmit Kaur, grandfather Hari Singh and aunt Daljit Kaur have been booked under Sections 406 and 420 of the IPC and Section 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.
The police said the marriage date had already been fixed.
“Invitation cards had been distributed and a venue booked, but the groom’s family called off the marriage in the eleventh hour,” an officer said.
The police said the two families tried to reach a compromise initially and Avtar Singh demanded that all expenses incurred by him be reimbursed. Jaswinder’s family, however, did not accept the proposal after which Avtar lodged a complaint with the police.
He accused the groom’s family of committing a fraud and said this was a huge embarrassment for him.
Deputy Superintendent of Police, Bassi Pathana, R S Sohal, who is conducting an inquiry into the case, said: “We will investigate the matter and initiate action after recording the statements of both parties.”
