Kolkata, February 1 Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said that his government would ask the Centre to allocate funds to increase the number of industrial training institutes (ITIs) and polytechnics in the state to promote local entrepreneurship here on Friday.

Speaking at an awards ceremony to felicitate successful entrepreneurs organised by the Kolkata chapter of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE), Bhattacharjee said: “I will soon be going to Delhi for the pre-budget meeting and there I am going to request the Central Government to sanction funds for increasing the number of ITIs and polytechnics by 100 per cent in the next one year.”

Currently, there are 74 such training institutes in the state.

The CM also stressed on the need for the growth of local, small and medium entrepreneurs in various sectors in the state like industry for steel, manufacturing units for power equipment, health equipments, and jute industry.

“Five to seven lakh students pass their school examinations each year, but only a handful get first classes. What will happen to the rest? We have to think of them as well,” he added.
