New Delhi L K Advani, who pitchforked BJP close to portals of power at the Centre in early 1990s, was elected to the newly-created post of Chairman of the party's Parliamentary Party in the first step towards a generational change in the organisational hierarchy.

82-year-old Advani was chosen at a meeting of party MPs, which amended the Constitution of the BJP Parliamentary Party to create the post, paving the way for election of Sushma Swraj as the next Leader of the BJP in Lok Sabha and to be its Leader of the Opposition.

Advani, who was given the power to appoint leaders of the party in both the Houses of Parliament named Swraj (57) to the post he held till now.

She represents the younger face of the party in the top hierarchy in accordance with RSS plans of party reins being given to younger leaders.

Simultaneously, Rajnath Singh (58) is expected to step down as party President on Saturday to make way for 52-year-old Nitin Gadkari as the party head.

The elevation of Advani in the Parliament Party marks an end of the era in the BJP which was brought to the position of the main Opposition in 1989 by Advani with his strident Hindutva plank, capped by the Rath Yatra from Somnath to Ayodhya.

BJP IS THE SOLUTION IN UNDEMOCRATIC INDIA by Vilas on 20 Dec 2009

Only In democratic country like India Muslims enjoy special status even though India is supposed to be secular. Only in a Democratic country like India Congress can bring in amendments to overrule Supreme Court decisions to safe guard outdated and undemocratic Muslim rituals. Yes Muslims have every right to be in Democratic India but at par with all other Indians. Advani is the name sake. It is the attitude of Muslim community wanting to be treated beyond and above the democratic principles that is not acceptable. As long as there is no" one man one law" and no common civil code as required by Indian Constitution there will be BJP As seculars like me cannot tolerate Indians differently based on their religious faith. If Muslims keep their religion at home, all problems will vanish overnight. Either you have Democratic India or have Gandhi family rule India. Choice is yours. Mine is a Democratic India where all are equal and strive for individual freedom and prosperity. What is yours?

Advani by GNS on 20 Dec 2009

Hindus must decide whether they want to live in 21 st century or try to correct historical wrongs through pogroms like the ones began by Advani and copy-cat Modi.BJP is finished if it wants to stick to a religious or pseudo-cultural agenda, the latter a face-saving device essentially with former's contents.Advani now wants to be a puppet master : that is why he chose meek & obedient Swaraj rather than able and independent Jaitley or Shourie. He arrogates himself to be a Lee Kuan Yew of India with none of latter's qualities or abilities.Hindus in India have absolutely no idea of the tragedy visited upon Hindus in Bangladesh,Indonesia,Gulf,Pakistan after Advani began his blood feuds from 1990.BJP has no future till it abandons its fundamentalist, under the cover,anti-Muslim,anti-Christian agenda under RSS mafia.

Advani and BJP have both won now. by comment on 19 Dec 2009

Only a few months ago, the media said the RSS will extricate BJP from Advani's clutches so that the party survives and Advani would be thrown to the dustbin. Nothing of the sort has happened. Advani continues as it mentor, its parliamentary party chairman. The media should know that it knows little about both BJP and RSS. They know even less about Advani. His contribution to BJP may be forgotten by selfish-minded people, but the right thinking members of the party recognise him as a great leader, a visionary and a true Hindu. Those who brand him as communal are unaware of the communalism of pseudo-seculars in the country. Certain people in the media say things that are better said than done. They know how narrow they are in their personal life. Which other religion is as liberal as Hinduism? Which other nation can accommodate aliens as India does? Hindus are rightly proud of being Hindus and Hinduism will live due to likes of Advani, not pseud-seculars. Advani and BJP have both won now

BJP and peace in South Asia by Kuriakose Pulikeel on 19 Dec 2009

Advani was a noun not an adjective as it sounded. Sushuma should now use the verbal form with precision (Sooshmam). Good Luck. But learn to be matured You are 58. Do not provoke communities to fight. Do not hurt the soul of India. Who lives if India dies? India has a soul firmly rooted on Hindu Culture. the recipe of that soul contains ingredients of souls of all Indians who belong to all religions but not of the Radical Hindu militants, the Islamic fundamentalists, the "upper castes" who think that others are subhumans, the extra right Christian evangelists who run after the poor with baptismal water the communists who propagate no work max pay and so on Learn to recognize and serve truth

CHAIRMAN ADVANI MAKES WAY by Shadi Katyal on 19 Dec 2009

He had any self respect, he should have gone long ago. a man who lights fire of hate in the nation, denies having any part in destruction of Babri Masjid should have been asked to leave. Here is a BJP leader who apologize from Pakistan while hate mongering in India. I have a very simple question for him and all others who continue to give credit to Jinnah of his 11th August statement which even Jaswant singh talk off. Jinnah wanted to wash his bloody hands and thus made fool of every one who beleives in that statment that people can go and worship in their temples and mosque etc. Was he not aware what was happening in Punjab??? Was he not the man sho signaled the 1946 Direct Action order and thus started the killings in Bengal? How can we be so naive and stupid to call him a secularist??? He had been a secularist when he was with Congress and even defended Tilak but Gandhi arrival and his being forced to leave Congress changed the scene.

Advani and Temple Politics by FelisLeo on 18 Dec 2009

Like many other readers, I too respect Advani because I see him as a strong and mature leader. But I cannot forget that he is the one who kindled and fanned religious beliefs of impressionable voters to score a political victory. It did help the BJP - at least in the short run - but it harmed the country. I wish we had an opposition that generates debate on government's performance in poverty reduction rather than on temple construction.

United the Indian Society by Radhey Gupta on 20 Dec 2009

Dear Felis, i agree that he did aroused Hindus but to understand their value in their own homeland. Gandhi-Nehru dynasty is hell bent upon dividing the Inidan society & having seen/ visited other natins i can say Indian society is perhaps the MOST divided society. Why? Because Nehru Gandi family wants to rule over India forever. They have learnt from British divide & rule. Hindu minds are too developed or very emotional & religious to understand this. Tell what do u think is the reason for Liberhan's report after 17-years. It should have been buried & a faith building exercise could instead have been started. Vajpayee govt did just that. They brought the relogious leaders of the two communities to the same table to find an amicable solution acceptable to both communities. Thats the difference. And unless a faith building exercise is undertaken to unite the society, progress comes in piecemeals & to a few.

Advani is the greatest indian of all time. He should be worshipped as god.

Advani the greatest LEADER of my time by Saurabh Bajaj on 18 Dec 2009

He is without doubt the greatest leader this country has ever seen. One who has silently taken the blame for all that went wrong and given the credit for all that went right. He was a party man who sacrificed just about everything for the party. He is extremely knowledgeable and educated and also awakened; it is people like him who can make this world a better place to live in. R.E.S.P.E.C.T.S.

Makes No Difference by Anant on 18 Dec 2009

What position Advani or Sushma have makes no difference. BJP has to change its idealogy and start to accept the fact that we don't live in Ram's time but in 21st century. All these yatras and Ram temples should be left to Hindu priests. Religion should not be mixed with politics since it hurts a lot of people in the country. BJP must recruit new blood who are liberal and understand the global living. The present senior and junior leadership lives in the past and shout more than they do any work. take examples of Advani, rajnath Singh, Jaitley, Prakash, Sushma, Rudy etc etc they are all hypocrites and good for nothing individuals. Only thing they do is shout, abuse and mislead Indians. BJP has to scrap itself from its present form before any one will take any notice of them.

a sign of infighting in the party by Maple on 18 Dec 2009

When all signs point to the fact that Advani has no political future other than retirement, the party needs to cling to him as the second rung leadership is badly divided and not able to agree on a new leader.

Advani by Rajesh on 18 Dec 2009

Advani is the legend, but India doesn't support him. India supports only train burners or train blasters

Advani a Legend by Anant on 18 Dec 2009

Legend of what? Destruction of India is the only thing one can nominate Advani and BJP leadership for.

Advani surely is a legend! by Raman on 18 Dec 2009

Advani is the only legend who have contributed enormously to the cause of reviving Hindu Identity of the country. Destruction theorists doesnt understand that this country has gone through thousands of years of destruction. Masjids were made on the top of Hindu deadbodies and blood. Most modern thinkers who opine here against him doesnt understand what's the idea behind India. Come'n you scrooges, its Bharat that stands, stood and will stand on it's own feet. And let me quote Swami Vivekananda - Bharat should exist for the World to Exist!
