Chandni chowk to china

Mumbai Filmmaker Ramesh Sippy has apologised for a scene in his latest film ‘Chandni Chowk to China’ which mentions India instead of Nepal as the birth place of Lord Buddha.

Nepal witnessed a huge uproar over the issue when the film released last month.

The opening scene where a voiceover described the hero (Akshay Kumar) as a man hailing from the birth place of Lord Buddha (India) was deleted in Nepal, however the scene was retained in India and elsewhere.

Buddha was born in Lumbini in Nepal, which is revered by Buddhists all over the world.

The neighbouring country witnessed large scale demonstrations when Bollywood's first kungfu comedy hit the screens.

Talking to reporters yesterday, Sippy said the film did not intend to hurt anyone's feelings. But,he admitted the film's script team fell short in research while handling a historical fact.

"The controversial scene is just a voiceover and was not even required. It would be deleted," he said apologizing on behalf of the entire cast and crew.

The film starring Akshay Kumar and Deepika Padukone has been panned by the critics and declared as a box office failure even though producers have claimed that it has earned Rs 45 crore.

Chandni Chowk, historical blunder by Gautam Naik on 04 Feb 2009

Was there any country as nepal then. It was all Bharat, if we wish to impart a boundry to that region. Actually lord Buddha was born in the kingdom ruled by his father. These kingdoms did not own any aliegance to any central national ruler. Buddha came first Nepal later. It would be apt to say that Nepal today includes the birth place of lord Buddha. How ironic that a society which has willingly rejected hinduism and allowed nonbelieving communist to rule, is making such a hue and cry over this issue. The film is any way moronic. Cant we be happy that lord Buddha, an incarnation of the only unchanging cosmic ( and that includes us stupid, arrogant, unfaithful, insignificant and proofseeking earthlings) reality took birth amongst us on this earth.

Why do they have to be affended. It is wrong to say either india or nepal. In buddha's period he was born into a shakiya tribe's kingdom. That means he was born into his own kingdom. Why do they have to bring in modern day politics into history. Or they should have told that he was born into a sub-continental kingdom.
