"The mission is definitely over. We have lost contact with the spacecraft," said Project Director of the Chandrayaan-1 mission M Annadurai.
However, he said: "It (Chandrayaan-1) has done its job technically...100 per cent. Scientifically also, it has done almost 90-95 percent of its job".
The two-year mission, launched on October 22 last year with much fanfare, was abandoned early today after the after radio contact with the mooncraft was abruptly lost at 0130 hours.
The Deep Space Network at Byalalu near here received the data from the 1,380 kg Chandrayaan-1, which carried 11 instruments on board, including six from overseas, during the previous orbit up to 0025 hours.
ISRO is conducting detailed review of the telemetry data from the spacecraft. "We will analyse as to what happened," Annadurai said.
Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft, launched by homegrown PSLV-C11 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota, has completed 312 days in orbit, making more than 3,400 orbits around the moon.
It has provided large volume of data from sophisticated sensors such as terrain mapping camera, hyper-spectral imager and moon mineralogy mapper, meeting most of the scientific objectives of the mission.
ISRO said last month Chandrayaan-1 had sent more than 70,000 images of the lunar surface which provide breathtaking views of lunar mountains and craters, especially craters in the permanently shadowed areas of the Moon's polar region.
Chandrayaan-1 was also collecting valuable data pertaining to the chemical and mineral content of the Moon, ISRO said on July 17.
Significantly, on August 21, ISRO and NASA performed a unique joint experiment that the Indian space agency said could yield additional information on the possibility of existence of ice in a permanently shadowed crater near the North pole of the moon.
The end to the Chandrayaan-1 mission comes just over four months after the onboard star sensor for determining the orientation of the spacecraft started malfunctioning on April 26, and one of the bus management units failed.

how chandrayaan 1 has lost in the space??can we get a brief information?
Even it has falied after 312 days round about Moon, It is a proud acheivement for India. Let us keep our flag high and believe we will further make leaps and bounds in the space research. Those who say it is a waste, let them think it is pienut compared to what is wasted in other areas of development. Secondly, to make a satellite, lauch it and put it in the orbit is not a mean achievement that too in the first attempt itself. No doubt we have to make fruitful research in other areas of science also. That does not mean we should overcry on the failure of the mission since it did not live upto two years as planned. what has been done so far is really commendable. Any research will give benifit only in the long run. Let us continue our effort, broaden our vision and deepen our knowledge about the frontiers of this universe. Long live Indian Sceintists. Jai Hind, Vande Mataram
Dear Chandra Sekhar , San Jose People are not hungry because of Chandrayaan, they are hungry because the fund alloted to the commonpeople by government in not fully utilised. If you alloted hundred and hundred corers to common people they will still remain hungrybecause that money will also not be utitlized by the government. Do you think that Indian government do not have money for the common people? India is one of the respected economy now, these few croresrupees do not matter for the government. It is not a fault of ISROthat people are hungry but ISRO ( ISRO is one of most successful institution of India) is just doing its job honestly. Its a failure of government that it is not working properly.
What Indians will do in moon????? Waste of money and time. Beter to feed poors. Educate the poors. Promote better life to poors. The moon can not fulfill poor Indians daily needs.
Guys we should be proud. ISRO could achieve so much in just its first mission. CHEER UP ISRO... awaiting Chandrayaan II
You are living in a fools paradise, look at the missing of AP Chief Minister Helicopter and your AIRFORCE IS NOT ABLE TO LOCATE IN A SMALL FOREST ON A RAINY AND INDIA WANTS US NASA HELP ---- YOU DISGUSTING PEOPLE ARE PRAISING ISRO
As India is asecond largest country and as well as developing at its pace. Our country should carry such kind mission . if any mishap happens don't be worried for that. When Dr APJ kalam was carrying out his research , at that time he also face same kind of situation i.e. failure. At last he got the success. So we should carry out such kind of activities to prove ourself in the mordern era. proper precautionary steps should be taken sothat such kind of mishap will not take place in the future. Simultaneously the government should focus on the development of the poor people sothat we can grow technically as well as well equiped atmosphere to compete with the other nations.
The comments of some people are quite pathetic. Can anybody name a nation that is always doing a perfect job, whether it is in science and technology or in any other field? Can't you see millions of $ worth NASA equipment just blew up? We are a nation who is regaining our strength after centuries of exploitation and abuse by foreign invaders and this process has started only some 60 years back. Considering this fact, India is doing great. By the way, growth of a nation is not only depends on whether there is enough food for everybody, but over all where are we. Without a space center no nation can survive in this modern world and everything is dependent on this, whether it is agriculture, IT, telecommunication, TV, etc., etc. Also we are the only pure democracy in Asia. So let these ISRO guys do their job and I am sure they will make us proud.
All you creatures who can't make your farts go up 6 inches are complaining because India put a space vehicle around the moon for 312 days! That's not achievement for you? How many countries can do that?
Not the end but just the beginning
I congratulate Indian Scientist for such marvellous feat. There is nothing wrong in failing the machine abruptly. It merely gives lesson to overcome the handicaps and make better equipments in future. Thats only way, we will progresss and go further in improving technologies and achieve further successes.Only naive people will take it as failure.Becuse journey in space had always been tricky,. Even highly advanced nation had see such "loss of control" in many of the space missions. It is natural, nothing is wrong in it.
INDIA, WHERE THOUSANDS OF KIDS SLEEP HUNGRY EVERYDAY, SHOULD NOT WASTE MONEY ON THIS. WHAT ARE WE DOING, SOMETHING WHAT USA DID MORE THAN 40 YEARS BEFORE? CHINA EVEN BEING WAY AHEAD OF US ECONOMICALLY, IS NOT WASTING MONEY ON THIS, RATHER QUICKLY INVENT VACCINE FOR N1H1, SELL TO THE WORLD AND MAKE NONEY/SAVE LIVES.
whateverour scientists are doing ,they are doing a great job..Setback do happen in this kind of profession..remember how india has progressed in space tech after a series of setbacks..We as public dont know what the kind of problems they r facing when they execute these prestigious projects..So we shouldnt place any nasty comments abt them..see how NASA lost their Apollo 13 mission but noone blamed them..But because we r indians ..hell breaks outMr. chandra sekar please avoid such nasty comments of our scientists...Becoz u yourself is named after a famous indian scientist..or your parents might have been eating stool when they gave u such a name..:)
It is really sad there is no moderator for this column on comments containing bad language calling names. Yes I agree India's priority or ISRO priority on Moon Mission may be wrong. But one should show restrain in use of words and express their anguish.India now atleast (after 60 years of independence) should make India a place to live with dignity by providing water, food and infrastructure for the people instead of wasting billions of rupees just to keep ISRO floating and keep Scientists busy. ISRO should develop technology how to use Solar energy , Sea Water as a fuel to drive our POWER needs
May be Congress has asked Isro to abruptly dropped this moon mission because it was not named after any Gandhi person. Next moon mission is planned under " Fake Gandhi Moon Mission".
I find the comment about our scientists harsh and unjustified. Every country has mission failures and have learned and improved from these failures.Unfortunately we being a developing country such failures become a very big deal, because of the costs involved. Even then calling our scientists a disgrace is unfair.
To all the chaprasis who are despairing and wringing their hands and sobbing right now, I will say that "if you cannot dream big, you will never achieve big". You will be condemned to be a chaprasi nation forever. We are already doing chaprasi work for advanced nations. Is that all you want India to be? Using our million strong mediocre talent to do low end chaprasi work at a cheap price for the west and Japan. There is no substitute for having cutting edge scientific capabilities and that is what ISRO and the moon mission enables us to develop. Young Indians, look to the future with confidence, pride and self-respect. Don't be satisfied to be a chaprasi, just because it gives you a job with an foreign name company.
You are so right Slum Dog Millionaire we can continue to spend Crores on Moon Mission after all you are one shit of a lucky guy who got some education and must be from one of those Corrupt DMK Or Congress Crooks who are swindling Nation's waelth in the name of Moon Missions when over 60% still live under poverty. Whether working for Foriegn Countries or for India , shall continue to live a Chaprasi you are not the controller. Lord The Supreme God Mah Vishnu is the ultimate Controller. You even have the name but you seem to not knowing the meaning of your own name. Sadly when people like you are contaminated with ego and false pride you shall not achieve anything. India was taken by 10 guys coming a boat your ego and idiotic ideas and brains could not save 169 lives during that 72 hr ordeal and with loose tongue trying speak loud... stop living in fools paradise and bring smile on rural Indians then one would admire your intellectual ability.
I stand on the bridge of the sinking ship that is India, and salute our ISRO scientists. As India sinks in the ever blue waters, I can see our scientists giving their all for India and our flag flying strong in the face of the coming hurricane. Jai Hind.
Chandrayan-I may have come to an end but, Mission Chandrayan continues. so please make a correction in ur heading as Chandrayan-I comes to an abrupt end instead of "Chandrayan" and please be careful before publishing such a respectable, and nation's most prestigious SPACE Breakthroughs ever had. Hats off! To all who are contributing for mission CHANDRAYAN.
IF A REAL PROBE OF THE MISSION FAILURE COULD BE HELD, IT WOULD BE FOUND THAT AN ITEM WAS NOT UP TO THE STANDARD REQUIRED BECAUSE SOME CONTRACTOR PAID OFF SOMEONE AND SOLD CHEAPER ITEM FOR A CONSIDERATION'! STORY OF CORRUPTION WILL NEVER END IN THIS COUNTRY!
I am not against those, but we need to remember our national constrains. We are not a country where 60% people give tax and having hundreds of billions of USD as R n’ D budget. Once we reach that stage we surely can do many fancy, “ground-braking” researches. To solve our basic problems we do not need ground breaking research but can achieve much higher in terms of general public or as a country if we just rationalize our spending. Check countries like Chili, Argentina, Poland, Romania, Brazil, China and many others. Take a representative picture of a city/village in those countries and compare with that with India.
Per capita food consumption in India has decreased from 186 kg per person annually in 1991 to 152 kg in 2001, despite government food subsidies costing billions of dollars. Already, estimates suggest that the financial cost of the Right to Education Bill will be between Rs 54,000 crore and Rs 73,000 crore A YEAR. We also need to remember that science and technology NEVER can make a country superpower but once a country becomes a super-power, it becomes science power house (History of Science Evolution: NATURE (2008) 545: 412-413). There are many countries that could not put satellite into orbit by its own or hydrogen bomb or have nuclear powered submarines but can provide higher literacy rate, better education, less civil conflict, drinking water for all, better road, better public health and sanitation and so on. In short, better quality of life for its people.
The trouble in India is more education one gets more illogical he becomes. Just read the postings, excuse Muslims using Hindu names or funny names, they only write to defame Hindus and BJP. These people do not understand that all the advancement in technology, medicine and IT are the result of space experiments. These are the Indians who even don't know that 'absolute zero' was invented by Hindus and without absolute zero no space probe would ever had materialized.
he same person Annadurai in 180s made non-working spacecraft simulator and ran away from control centre when the simulator was used first time. Again, on second day of IRS-1A launch he killed the satellite by taking a wrong decision against the op ion of experts and ISRO had spend a lot time and money to recover the satellite then. He stole the work his colleagues and published a paper on his name for he was nastily scolded by current head of ISTRAC. ISRO owes an explanation to nation and all in ISRO how can such be promoted and made project director of such a prestigious project. What else can we expect from a person who runs away from his responsibilities, kills satellite and steels other work. ISRO knows all these facts very well. In spite of that it so many nonsense and Tughalak-like things. Does ISRO has nay explanation?
When Americans suffered setbacks to their space shuttle programme, INCLUDING destruction of two space shuttles and loss of precious lives of astronauts, the spirit of the nation was undeterred and the motto was "the dream shall never die". They said the best way to honour the fallen heros was to continue the mission and RETURN to space. Contrast that with the defeatist comments from Indian readers who are berating the scientists, and all because a very difficult mission ended earlier than planned! It achieved most of its objectives but that doesn't seem to matter to the ignorant public. As proud as I am of our scientists, I am ashamed of the Indian public in general. This is not the spirit that can build a strong, confident nation.
Hello General How pathetic is this to read' India is asking NASA TO HELP IN LOCATING INDIA"S MOST CORRUPT CM RAJASHEKAR REDDY'S HELICOPTER IS MISSING AND FAILING TO LOCATE WITHIN A SMALL AREA OF 300 Sq KMS OF FOREST AND YOU BOOSTING WITH PRIDE AND EGO TALKING OF GREAT SUCCESS AND ACHIEVEMENT...INDEED THIS IS ADD A COLOR AND A STAR TO YOUR EGO... I HOPE TO HEAR YOUR REPLY...I SALUTE YOU GENERAL
General with due respects to you and for the services you gave to the corrupt imptent Govt the world has seen in the recent times. 10 Guys coming on boat took the whole Nation for Ransom and you had no voice then. You held a coveted post and you have a zero knowledge how even today the poor farmer is being exploited, the villages do not have proper potable water, several thousands of low caders Jawans and ex servicemen are struggling with low pensions in this high price rising Country and you as a Matured officer speaking on a stupid watseful expenditure. US has mislead the world and even today there are million contridictions of Man landing on Moon in 1969 when the Technology was not that advanced. Had there been some realistic success in their mission they would claimed that Moon belongs to them and not to others. They shall continue to make fools like Indians to spend on such projects and continue to live under poverty. We Indians are SLUM DOGS AND WE WON OSCARS FOR THAT AND WE SHALL CONTINUE TO WIN MANY MORE AS LONG AS STUPID PROJECTS LIKE THIS ARE ENCOURAGED BY SO CAlLED Litterate class of High flying egoistics mania. WHAT AMERICA IS DONT COMPARE. THEY HAVE REALIZED THAT SUCH PROJECTS ARE WASTE AT THIS TIME WHEN THE WORLD IS IN ECONOMIC CRISIS. JUST REMEMBER THAT YOUR MIGHTY INDIA WAS MADE TO LICK BOOTS BY 10 Guys coming on a BOAT.... I SALUTE YOU MR. GENERAL AND KINDLY REFRAIN FROM PREACHING US IDEALOGY AND PREACH SRIMAD BHAGAVAD GITA
Seeing the comments from the filthy readers, I think India only deserves the Bollywood criminals like Salman and ShahRukh and scoundrel politicians. Indian scientists deserve better and should go where they will be appreciated and respected. I hope they leave India, they are too good for India and Indian people are ungrateful, cheats and beneath contempt. I hope NASA hires all these gems and gives them lots of money and a good, happy life.
