"Making signboards in Marathi is mandatory as per the law but why compulsion over the font size," president of Federation of Retail Traders Welfare Association, Viren Shah asked, while speaking at a press conference in Mumbai.
The association went to the Court because MNS was forcibly trying to change the signboards in Marathi and demanded the bigger fonts, he said. While the law says Marathi is compulsory, it does not specify about the font size, he added.
The traders are not against Marathi language or Maharashtra but MNS should learn to respect other languages also, Shah said.
Shah also announced to form an NGO of five lakh traders in the state to solve such issues. "An NGO would deal with security of traders, businness and other problems," he said.
Film director Mahesh Bhatt was also present for the conference and blamed the State Government for being 'a mute spectator' on the issue.
"The Government is not taking any prompt action because they would not get any political mileage from this issue," Bhatt said.
Shah was provided police security and was asked to change the venue of the press conference, as he was allegedly threatened by MNS activists.
His shop at Crawford Market area in south Mumbai was vandalised by MNS activists last week when he raised the issue.
