Islamabad Iftikhar M Chaudhry resumed duties as Pakistan's Chief Justice, more than 16 months after the independent-minded top judge was removed unceremoniously by former President Pervez Musharraf and a week after the Opposition-led protest forced the Government to reinstate him.

60-year-old Chaudhry "assumed the charge of office" after midnight last night following the retirement of Abdul Hamid Dogar, a statement issued by the Supreme Court said.

A simple but impressive national flag hoisting ceremony took place at the residence of Chaudhry amid cheers by a large number of lawyers, members of civil society and political workers.

Enthusiastic supporters of Chaudhry from across the country gathered outside his residence, expressing happiness over his restoration, as heavy contingents of police guarded all the streets leading to the Chief Justice's House, Geo TV reported.
