"I will be going to the US next week. The dates are being finalised," Chidambaram said.
Asked about his mission, he said the Ministry of External Affairs has prepared dossiers on evidence relating to Mumbai attacks and he would discuss them with his interlocutors in Washington. Details are being finalised, Chidambaram said.
The Home Minister is expected to meet US Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and possibly Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. A meeting with members of transition team of President-elect Barack Obama is also likely.
Chidambaram's discussions with American leaders could cover a broad ambit including the steps taken by the Bush Administration in the aftermath of 9/11 attacks after a lot of critical self appraisal.
US Ambassador to India David C Mulford on Saturday met Chidambaram, apparently to tie up details regarding his visit.
External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee has said India will share evidence regarding the role of Pakistan-based elements with the world community, which he feels should do more to ensure that perpetrators of the Mumbai attacks are brought to justice.
He has said that the international community has not done enough to build pressure on Pakistan in making it fulfill its commitments on not allowing its soil to be used to terrorism directed against India.
The evidence, the Indian government has put together, includes the confession of the lone Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorist held in Mumbai terror attack Ajmal Amir Kasab.
The evidence will mostly include Kasab's confession to the police wherein he has given details of how he became a motivated terrorist of Lashkar-e-Toiba from a normal youth of Faridkot in Pakistan's Punjab province.
It also includes records of logbook recovered from the vessel in which the 10 terrorists came from Karachi, records of satellite phone used by the attackers and transcript of conversations between the attackers and their handlers in Pakistan, sources said.
The dossier also includes the corroborative evidence tracking the journey of the attackers from Karachi to Mumbai, they said.
Investigators have found evidence to show that the terrorists, who struck at the Taj Hotel, Trident Hotel and Nariman House on November 26, were in touch with their handlers in Karachi even while their three-day engagement with security forces was on.
The evidence will be shared with Pakistan along with the US, UK, China and other countries which have influence on Islamabad.

Since when did US begin to rule India? I thought India won freedom from the British in 1947 but looks like I missed some history. So like Canada which has the English Queen as the head of state, US President is our defacto ruler!!!! What spineless cowards the Congress government is and has been for 60 years. Why not present Chidu and the old tired hag MSingh bangles? Swift action (surgical strikes) is whats needed, like Israel. Overanalysis leads to inaction.

When will Indians stop running to the US for dealing with nation living off donations. Since Independence the US has been taking India for a ride and idiots keep following the same path. As for Mr Chidambaram going to the US I sincerely hope he doesn't return like our beloved Lal Bahadur Shastri did from Russia.
It displeases me when the Home Minister of the mighty country INDIA running to USA to show the papers of proof. It is really a sorry tale and I think we must be master of our own soil and make the judgement of action as fit to us. Take the action first then justify later as I don't think it is necessary either. UN has left the authority and don't have to go their either, we made one mistake on Kashmir and don't want another.
The Italian has granted Mr. Chidambaram permission to make a case for Indian security with Uncle Sam. Bravo!!!

With a grave security sitution in India, the Home Minister should remain present at HQ and leave the diplomacy part to the External Affairs Minister.
How much time would it take to destroy the terror hideouts? How much time would Man(Woman)Mohan Singh take to react? How much time does it take to arrive at a decision to defend the country? War is not the solution, but keeping quiet and waiting for pakistan to do what India should do is also not the solution. Pakistan is a rogue country, and wont do anything to mess up the ISI and armed forces which are hand in glove with this whole terror attack.
