Children plant saplings, hold competition to celebrate Earth Day

Chandigarh The city celebrated the Earth Day here on Wednesday with much zeal and fervour.

St. Joseph’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44: Various competitions were organised to mark the day and encourage the students to save earth. They were also made aware of the adverse effects of global warming. Saplings were planted by the children in the school ground. While the primary block organised a poster making competition, middle block held an inter-house paper reading competition, in which the students brought forth their views of saving the earth. Students of senior block made paper bags using newspaper and waste paper. Skits related to environment were also staged.

DAV Model School, Sector 15: NSS wing of the school organised a cultural programmes to mark the day and students came together to sign a treaty to save the earth. A face painting competition was the added attraction of the day. A tree plantation ceremony also took place to enhance the greenery of the surroundings. Principal of the school, Dr Rakesh Sachdeva, was also present on the occasion.

Shivalik Public School: The day was celebrated by Prakriti, the eco-club of the school with an objective to make the area green. Posters and slogans were displayed on the campus.

Manav Mangal Smart School, Mohali: Number of activities were organised to commemorate the day. Children of Pre ¿ Nursery to KG were made aware of the concept of germination of seeds. Students of classes I to IV made pen and magazine holders from used cartons under the theme ‘Recycle and Reuse’. Classes V to VII had the activity Zero Carbon-in-city where the children offered practical solutions to environmental problems. Students of classes VIII and IX formed a human chain holding placards with remedies of preservation and conservation of the environment. They also distributed paper bags at Phase X market to encourage people to avoid usage of polythene bags. The director of the school, Sanjay Sardana, said that involvement of children will add impetus to the cause to save the earth and make it green.
