China detains 51 for practicing Christianity

Beijing Police raided a church in western China and detained 51 Christians, later sentencing one church member to 10 days detention, a US-based monitoring group and police said Tuesday.

The China Aid Association said police in Urumqi, a city in Xinjiang province, raided a house that lodged a church on Friday, detaining the Christians and releasing 48 later that day.

Two people, Zhu Jinfeng and Yang Miaofa, were briefly held by police. Yang was released after paying a 500 yuan ($73) fine. A third person, Zhou Li, was sentenced to 10 days of administrative detention, the group said.

At the Shayibake District Public Security office, a man named Tu'ersen confirmed the police raid. The group said the three were church leaders, but Tu'ersen said Zhou, Zhu and Yang were detained only because they were the oldest members. He said he did not know whether they had been released.

China allows Christianity but wants to channel it into state-backed churches. Still, religious activity is expanding, putting officials and police on the defensive.

India's Biggest Threat by kumar on 06 Jan 2009

The biggest threat the Indian union facing now are two menaces, viz. religious conversion and terrorism. This is a time when prayer halls and churches all over Europe are getting converted into Clubs and Libraries, scores of it are raised in India, majority of those places, there are no christians for name sake. This is the handy work of Keralites, who leaped into all over India for livelihood but now involved in conversion there. If this menace if not stopped by the Govt. many such Kandhamals are bound to happen not only in Orissa; but elsewhere in India, for which Christians are only responsible. This conversion terrorism should be stopped immediately, in HINDUSTAN.

China details people christianity by k p chandra on 06 Jan 2009

When China takes action against people changing their religion, no one reacts. When Islamic countries take action, no one reacts, but only India is soft target and whenever people protest against conversions, all and sundry including the Pope speaks out. No one thinks that it an internal matter of India. Do we learn anything from such episodes. Secularism does not mean conversion to other religion. It essential means respecting each others religions. Like citizenship, people adopt a religion by birth and not by knowing different religions and then deciding on it. Therefore, one is identified with the religion which is practised by the parents. In view of this, India needs to have strong legislation banning conversions and also monitoring the activities of the so called social/charigable organizations who are alluring people to change religion in the name of social work. While we should respect all religions, we should also stop conversions.

China and religion by chanakya on 06 Jan 2009

I fail to understand this. This treatment is only for christanity and hinduism. But not for mosques any where in the world. Why people are not treated equally in religion aspects. Even China proved that it lacks will to curb this dangerous tendencies.
