China evokes Lincoln to warn Obama about Dalai Lama

Dalai lama

Beijing A Chinese government spokesman said Barack Obama should be especially sympathetic to China's opposition to the Dalai Lama and Tibetan independence, as a black president who lauded Abraham Lincoln for helping abolish slavery.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang made the comments at a news conference on Thursday, four days before Obama arrives in China for a summit that will cover the two big powers' vast and sometimes tense economic, diplomatic and security ties.

Obama did not meet Tibet's exiled Buddhist leader, the Dalai Lama, when he was in Washington in early October. But the Dalai Lama has said they may meet after Obama's visit to China, which condemns the Buddhist monk as a separatist for demanding Tibetan self-determination.

China is sure to condemn such a meeting, and spokesman Qin underscored -- and possibly intensified -- the political temperature of the issue by citing Obama's background and admiration for President Abraham Lincoln, who opposed the secession of the southern states and sought to abolish slavery, which Qin likened to Tibetan society under the Dalai Lama.

After Obama's inauguration, the US president said he would not have been able to reach that position without the efforts of Lincoln, said Qin.

"He is a black president, and he understands the slavery abolition movement and Lincoln's major significance for that movement," said Qin.

"Lincoln played an incomparable role in protecting the national unity and territorial integrity of the United States."

Beijing calls the Dalai Lama a dangerous "splittist" encouraging Tibetan independence, a charge he denies. He says he is merely seeking true autonomy for Tibet, which last year erupted in riots and protests against the Chinese presence.

China's stance was like Lincoln's, said Qin.

"Thus on this issue we hope that President Obama, more than any other foreign leader, can better, more deeply grasp China's stance on protecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity," said Qin.

Asked about any broader consequences of a possible meeting between Obama and the Dalai Lama, Qin said Beijing opposes any such meetings between the exiled Tibetan leader and foreign leaders, and said the issue was among China's core concerns.

"We must treasure the positive circumstances and opportunities for China-US relations," Qin said.

"In particular, both sides must respect each other's core interests and major concerns, and Tibetan issues are among China's core interests and major concerns."

Great going China by Vivek on 14 Nov 2009

China's constant His-Holiness-the-Dalai-Lama-bashing has given him unprecedented press coverage. Chinese are really lemmings. They dont have any independent thought. Whatever the leading lemming does, the rest will follow. They actually think that the rest of the world are idiots & will buy their propaganda at face value :D His Holiness has emerged as the new age Gandhi. The world will see right through their lies & will take the Tibetan side. This will further advance the goals of Tibetans. Its high time our govt wakes up & de-recognizes Tibet as a legitimate part of PRC. Isn't it ironical that we allow a "govt in exile" to exist, yet recognize Tibet as part of China ? Enough of the bhai-bhai blunders.

Chinese Foreign Ministry losing sense of balance by Anirban Mukherjee on 13 Nov 2009

The Chinese Foreign Ministry might think they are weaving a new Chinese puzzle with the intricacy of fine Chinese silk, but, in effect, their utterances are losing all sense of proportion and balance and, at this rate, will make Beijing the laughing stock of the international diplomatic circles. If it is their purpose to return to the path of the Buddha through the way of the Laughing Buddha though, then the diplomatic route may not be the right one. But then the Cultural Revolution might have left the Chinese with no cultural option to embrace at times of identity crisis, like the one China is evidently going through now, and the worldwide spree of setting up Confucius Institutes for learning the Chinese language that Beijing thinks will help propoagate Chinese culture are likely to prove a very poor way of showcasing the depth ofa culture that is more than 5000 years old. It might be better for China to leave Tibet to the Tibetans and look inwards to regain her lost identity.

india must wake up by krunal shekhar on 13 Nov 2009

Present chinese policy is just a glimpse of future which will witness more bullying from china in foreign policy. India must take an appropiate strong stand against china to curb the menace from growing. Whatever USA does to china is not important for us. today forbes has declared obama as world strongest man, with WHO Jin Tao as second. USA stand on dalai lama, will show who actually is first amongst worlds strongest man.If USA bows down to chinese pressure, it will change international politics drastically and unfortunately against countreis like india.

China is asking the World to Demand Tibet for tibetan refugees. by jnansk on 13 Nov 2009

Both EU and U.S. including U.N Body bring China to the table to return all the Tibetan Refugees residing in India for last 50 years back to Tibet. China should have never be given the UNSC seat until they gave back the Tibetan peninsula back to its rightful owners.

China's Tibetean Policy by Jethinder Kumar on 13 Nov 2009

China continues its bullying tactics in dictating its policies to the world. When will China wake up to the reality of human rights and dignity of life? A reversal of China's intimidating policy towards the Dalai Lama and relatively weaker nations surrounding China will yield mutually beneficial and long term results. What is preventing China from waking up and smelling the coffee?

Dalai VS Barak by Antony Tauro on 12 Nov 2009

It is sure a acid test for Barak Obama to prove that he is the Most suitable person on earth today to receive the Nobel Peace Award. If human feelings less countries China dictates what the rest of the world must do, why not all countries come together and crush this unhuman policy of china. Today china ia a very very big monster for the world. If the world keep quite about it, then world will be swallowed by this monster in a course of time.

Dalai Lama by Arvind Mathur on 12 Nov 2009

The can nothing closer to India than Gautam Buddha and Budhism. We cannot let a Godless communist nation like China dictate terms to freedom of religion which is basic to Indian and American democracy.

No comparision at all by observer on 12 Nov 2009

Abraham Lincoln with his Quaker upbringing and liberal values being quoted by the Chinese leadership ? If one sentence could describe this it would be "the Devil quoting the scriptures!" Fact is the People's Republic of China doesn't need to work hard to resemble the mythical evil dragon.

Saying sorry to "n.r.i"whose posting appears elsewhere by john jacobs on 13 Nov 2009

Thanks to "observer" for saving me some embarrassment. I posted a comment under the excellent points made by n.r.i.I was merely following up a point in his comment that China is in illegal occupation of Tibet under the caption "The devil quotes the bible". The caption was inadvertent and reflects no aspersion on his posting. I hope n.r.i reads this as an apology.

China must accept reality. Tibet cannot be annexed by force by Anil Kohli on 12 Nov 2009

China is least qualified to speak of Human Right and Slavery. This country must look within and answer to itself as to the gross Human right abuse and wanton killing of the peace loving people of Tibet. An authoritarian government is lecturing the world about a Buddhist monk who is also recipient of the Nobel Prize for Peace. He is an apostle of Non-Violence and harmony. Nothing can be more disingenuous than calling His Holiness a separatist. The people of Tibet shud get their freedom if they want it. Tibet was an independent country and has been illegally occupied by China. The sooner China vacates it the better it would be. The more China speak against Dalai Lama the higher number sympathisers of Tibet will born in this world.

China can't hide its guilt.... by `CV KUMAR on 12 Nov 2009

It is not china is afraid of Dalai Lama but it is their guilt which surfaces every time Dalai Lama does something. Because it reminds China and the World at the same time that Dragon attacked, killed and made poor and simple people of godly nature homeless and occupied their country beause they were defenceless. United Nations or not, CHINA asserts itself like a Rouge and the world looks the other way, because how many battles the world can fight on behalf of others? History proves God is there somewhere and when it strikes every sin is accounted for in SECONDS. InsteadQin Gang should have remembered and reminded his gang members that when God grinds, HE grinds the finest. Time will prove it.

China is playing the cards well by bb on 12 Nov 2009

We must admit that China is playing its cards well. Only France is the country which has stood up to China and asked them to buzz off after India. Am really looking forward to see other countries with guts who can stand up to China. Remember our real enemy is also our weakness and non violent attitude. You have to crush a missile with a missile or else if you bend down to kiss the feet of the chinese soldier who has defiled the modesty of your women then you are in the wrong era. Buddha had supreme powers wherein huge boulders would split into powder before hitting him or his disciples. Today the Dalai Lama's devotees are raped and murdered in Tibet and he and all of us keep looking on. Lets face it we do not have faith in God nor do we have supernatural powers. So pick up your sticks in defence. You have to do what u must in these interesting times. Lets not try to say goodbye to our beautiful country and planet in this era of Business by War.

DALAI LAMA ., NOW AND NOT WAIT AFTER OBAMA HUSSAIN VISIT TO CHINA IS OVER . IT IS SHAME ON AMERICANS .

The devil quotes the bible by john jacobs on 12 Nov 2009

Historically, Tibet was ruled under the Lamas as defacto independent state till the Chinese invaded, under pretext no more than tenuous claim on Tibet.By brutal subjection, China deprived the Tibetan people of their right to self determination. The world community's apparent lack of zeal to defend human rights in Tibet appears to have lent a sense of legitimacy in Chinese eyes to their occupation of Tibet. However,in the eyes of justice, the usurper enjoys no more right to his ill-gotten lands than the robber to his loot.

NOT TRUE by Colonel Nirmal Mahajan , EME, Veteran on 12 Nov 2009

Why is China scared of a Buddhist monk...DALAI LAMA...Spiritual leader of Budhists, Peace noble prize winner...Aman full of compassion. For no rhyme or reason, China drags Dalai Lama's name in everything. Tawang iS EMOTIONALLY VERY CLOSE TO HIM AS HE HAD HALTED THERE DURING ESCAPE FROM CHINA.In all farness..China must grand automonous status to Tibet...These poor refugees living in India for 50 yrs must return to their home land...China is converting these pece loving, simple people into revolutionaries....Save Tibet is their slogan...Ilive in Dehradun which has a very large population of Tibetans and they are living very peacefully. though trying to preserve their identity, culture, language.DASHI DILLEY TO ALL MY PEACE LOVING SIMPLE TIBETAN FRIENDS....

china's evocation by thatchanamoorthy on 12 Nov 2009

china's evokes abraham lincoln to warn barrak obama, president of USA about dalai lama, the spiritual leader is deplorable. The chinese government has not done anything for the upliftment of old tibetean tribals and people but they built roads, big building, airports for easy movement of chinese army. the fundamental right of the tibetean is being crushed and exploted by the chinese army. The people of tibet is still under poverty line and no steps have been taken for their welfare. i am surprising how the chinese government rebukes obama for not doing like abraham lincoln for abolistion of slavery.First let them give freedom, autonomy, implement proper welfare scheme for the people tibet and then talk about abolition of slavery. the entire world and community should oppose the chinese government about heinous action against tibetean.

Look who is callin,",Kettle is Black." by Jatinder S Hoon on 12 Nov 2009

Little knowledge is a dangerous thing,China and its media have selective quotes, taken out off context. Lincoln also said,"DEMOCRACY IS, BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE AND OF THE PEOPLE.China and its fire throwing dragon views are not going to hold in the civilized democratic countries, they are just adding fuel to the flame of freedom fighters.

Discovery of Tibet under Communist History by Maulana Jawaher Lull Nehloo on 12 Nov 2009

Oh, great to learn some communist history of USA! China is like Lincoln, and I always thought it was like Mao the gun power crazy womaniser. Never knew that the Communists in China were practiing democracy while fooling the world that they were running a state powered by their sweatshop workers and pigsty farmer. In fact China is better than Lincoln. Lincoln could not encroach on Mexico and Canada and limited himself to only a few states of the US, california and texas excluded. However China has occupied not only Tibet but also the Muslim state of East Turkestan and unified them to China. In fact, East Turkestan, like Tibet, was also suffering from the slavery of the blacks just like America was, and Mao bravely like Lincoln freed the blacks in Tibet and Turkestan from slavery of Dalai Lama and India. I hope soon our own Bamponth can start teaching the misguided Indians this great new Communist history written by Chinese. ;-)

India should also convey is discomfort with Chinese support to Anti Indian activities like Maoist and Naxalite movements and Chinese in action on Chinese people / parasites who wants India to be divided in 26 independent states, 4 dams on Brahmaputra River, Standing by Pakistan and openly supporting Pak etc?

Why are you shaking in your boots ? by Boby Mehta on 13 Nov 2009

Are you telling us that Indians are so gutless and cowards that they have to rely on US ? Does China rely on any other country ? If China has 1.4 billion people, India has 1.15 billion and still you shake in your boots. What a character.
