London, May 22: China's response to the earthquake disaster shows encouraging signs of openness but Beijing still lacks the moral authority of a true superpower, the Dalai Lama has said in an interview.

The Chinese authorities are slowly becoming more transparent and Beijing's Western economic allies need to spell out where they are going wrong, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader told BBC radio.

The Dalai Lama is in Britain until May 30 as part of a five-country tour, with talks on human rights and peace as well as meetings with lawmakers including Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

The Buddhist monk was asked whether the transparency shown by China in dealing with the earthquake gave him hope about the way Beijing might deal with Tibet in the future.

"It is an indication that China is changing, becoming more open, and I think the leadership gradually or cautiously moves onto more openness, more transparent," he said.

"This is good so I'm hopeful about the handling in government and media with earthquake, I think quite transparent. It is a wonderful, an encouraging sign."

He described the earthquake's impact as "shocking".

"When I heard about young children, the students, then I really felt because of one child policy, I think many of these children's parents they have only one child. So if that one vanish, how much pain, very, very sad."

The 8.0-magnitude earthquake on May 12 which struck the south-western Sichuan province has killed or left missing more than 74,000 people, according to the Chinese government, and left 5.2 million people homeless.

dalai lama - who ? by Shahid on 23 May 2008

Get over it Mr. D Lama... China is here to stay and nobody can do anything about it. Talking about morality amd morals, sitting in UK or USA, shooting your mouth off.. and you talk about morality. Super Powers do not need permission from D. Lamas, G W Bushes, Tony Blairs, D Browns, Putins, or for that matter all critics of China. The same champions for the likes of D Lama, of the so called morality of China, if would have been a part of China growth and successes making money and fame, then he would be actually the main propogator of China as Super Power... So, D Lama, get over it, and stay just in UK.

China Superpower? by Vejain on 23 May 2008

China could, at best, be described as a 'Super Power' in the making. It is not because it possesses nuclear weapons - even paupers like Pakistan have these weapons (aided and abetted by China for its own strategic interests). China's recent economic success is what has made it what it is today. One has to remember that most of this success is founded on exports of manufactured goods to the West (run by the likes of Bushes and Blairs). The West has a choice of countries it can import from. If it decides to stop importing from China, the bottom will fall out of China’s economy. The same applies to the use of oil for energy. If the West decided to switch to alternative sources of energy such as nuclear power, the bottom would fall out of all OPEC countries’ economies. So do not be so belligerent.

They will come and they will go.laws of God's Wisdom by DILIP/FRANCE on 23 May 2008

Just like you have expressed your convulated opinion,so give the same respect to D.Lama and to others.knowing the ideology you are driven by, it is not surprised morality and decency is alien to you, believe in raw and ruthless treachery, cruelty, brutality, disregard for humanity and spiritual wisdom. Before you get so hot head with China bling bling and hype, you must also note that China will not be only power base in the 21stCentury,there will be others, as strong if not stronger, than China econmically or militarily.China is the new in kid on the block,it has come it will also go,like Super powers, including the invading and imperial Islamic empire.Be cool.

China need to practice Buddha's philosophy by PK on 22 May 2008

China need to practice Buddha's philosophy. Atheism and materialism has ruined so many culture and civilizations of the world. Communist Soviet ruined the human values and spirituality, and has become crude animals. China destroyed their culture and civilization. Mao killed over 60 million Chinese and become the world's number one mass-murderer. Over a million Tibetan were killed in the last 50 years, and thousands ethnically cleansed. Adharma has engulfed China, its matter of time they will enjoy the fruits. Before that, wisdom must prevail upon them and get rid of greed of territories. They must vacate Indian territory of Akshi Chin of J

Buddhism by eugene on 23 May 2008

If all the nations were to practise Buddhist and Gandhisn philosophies your argument has ground. Economic/military might is the only diplomacy ruling the global policies today. Otherwise why Iraq and why not North Korea? nuclear POWER !!!!! Who is the bully/hypocrite? China or the US????

Let us be optimistic by Bipin . C .J on 23 May 2008

It is to be appreciated that there are many good people in china. And all of them are not bound to be under the curse of the supernatural power because they dont believe in supernatural power? who is 100% true that they dont believe in God. Does anyone think that supernatural power is a punishable power rather than a merciful. Only humans can be punishing but not supernatural power. it is all merciful. India had a lot of natural calamities throught years. Examples are seen in Gujarat and Orissa. All the Indians believe in supernatural powers and they have worship and prayers through out the day. then , why the disasters happen? The politicians caused disasters in India is unbearable. Still all the believers of supernatural powers give a way to the politicians practice their way of distroying human life. Calamities happen just as the cause from the nature and not the curse of supernatural powers. If anyone thinks so, we limit the supernatural power and it is not supernatural power anymore.

Moral and Spiritual authority is what the totalatarian system lacks. by DILIP/FRANCE on 22 May 2008

Super Power comes and go.China has now come and China will also Go.THe recent earthquake has just proved one point, and the next will be the environmental pollution.Yes Might will always be RIGHT and China's bullying will not prevail for too long as well.Moral and Spiritual wisdomand authority will always rue the day,a time tested and proved again and again, phenomenon.Gandhi,Mandela and Martin Luther are some of the legends of our time. Do not get to carried away with China glitz and hype.time will tell.

Super by eugene on 22 May 2008

Despite the problems of overpopulation and natural disasters, China' growth rate in all spheres does need a supernatural power. And it has proved that.As much as I respect the Dalai Lama as a spiritual leader, his political views from UK on morals undermines his stature.

good by arun on 22 May 2008

What has india as a country done for the sursivors of the earthquake is less than what pakistan as a nation has contributed to china. Well grow up india, use the oppurtunities to winback a friendship

Moral authority? by raju on 22 May 2008

A few decades ago the world said that China is a sleeping giant. Mao retorted by saying "let the giant sleep for when it wakes up the whole world will tremble". Super power is super only because they dwell on the adage that 'Might is Right' No moral authority counts. One who can bully can become a superpower and to bully one has to be an economic and military power. china has both. That is why a pussycat like India can never become a superpower. We take hits even from small non entities and yet can do nothing except a protest on a scrap paper. That is the status the so called 'leadership' has taken this country to.

Moral authority and Super powers by Pradeep Phadke on 22 May 2008

Super Powers derive their status from their military and economic strength.I don't think culture, moral values, etc have any meaning. If it was so India with its heritage and over 5000 years of history would have acquired the Super Power status long time ago but the world calls us a leading developing nation!China does not need any body's approval to become a Super Power and least from the existing Super Powers and leaders who have on-going disputes with China. In any case what moral authority do US,UK or Russia have?
