China provided nuke weapon blueprint to Pakistan

Washington It is China which provided Pakistan with the blueprint to build a nuclear weapon, in early 1980s, a small, reliable armament that could be delivered on India by attack aircraft or missile, according to a new book.

The blueprint was delivered as the desperate Pakistani nuclear scientists led by A Q Khan were unable to build the weapon they wanted, said the book by David Albright, a former UN weapons inspector.

"The best it (Pakistan) could hope for was a bomb weighing a few thousand pounds, akin to what the United States detonated over Japan. Once again, Pakistan would rely on the technological advances of another country for help, but this time it would use diplomacy instead if espionage," says the book.

The book "Peddling Peril: The Secret Nuclear Trade Arms America's Enemies" that hit the stands today gives an in-depth account of how the maligned A Q Khan network through espionage and stealing build the nuclear plant and finally weapon for Pakistan, the secret technology of which was later passed to several rogue States.

Albright, founder and president of the Washington-based Institute for Science and International Security, in his book offers an uneven expose on the "illicit trade in nuclear technology" and the threats it poses to American security.

According to the documents assessed by Albright and referred in the book, the United States came to know about the secret China-Pak ties on the nuclear technology; but the then Carter Administration opted to ignore it as it apparently did not wanted this to affect its ties with Pakistan in the aftermath of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

This despite the fact that there were mounting stack of circumstantial evidence of their collusion.

"For Pakistan and A Q Khan, cooperating with China quickly provided to be a boon. The Chinese provided Pakistan with blue prints for building a nuclear weapon, most likely the Chic-4, first tested as a missile warhead in 1966 and detonated above ground, with an explosive force of twelve kilotons, equivalent to 12,000 tons of TNT.

"They also provided 50 kilogrammes of weapon-grade uranium," Albright writes in his book.

"Pakistan now had the blueprint of a proven weapon. In 1981, A Q Khan sent his procurement agents detailed drawings of weapons component with orders to buy them from European companies," the book says.

Noting that China's deal with Pakistan was dramatic there was little consensus among US government officials over what ultimate agenda it served, the book says China provided Pakistan with nuclear assistance to bolster its security.

We all know about our well organized life cycle and the need to protect the globe. We also know what is true happiness and what is sorrow, but as a group/country we ignore our responsibility for want of better life or share of market as per our definitions. That is where the competition and race to beat other starts.By and large, most of us suffer from this mean mentality and are going to fall into the ditch. It is nice to catch the thief, but it is important to kill his mother as she has the capacity to produce many.

A differnt kind of Nuke by Arjun on 17 Mar 2010

The totalitarian communist dictators of China is afraid and underming india. we beat them their on game. Their weakness is they are afraid of their own people, they do not trust them. Our biggesst Nuke is our free thoughts ideas we carried for ceturies and it is growing as cancer under china's soft belly. The same idea of Budhisam and freedom to thinking and freedom of worship. We need to support the Independence of Tibbet. Support Taiwan, Vietnam,Cambodia, Laos, Suppy arms to every anti china movements. We need to keep the pressure on them, they will crumble like a cassile of cards.

Build yourself first by Vikas on 17 Mar 2010

In this 21th century one country canot trust another country blindly even though whatever treaty they have. Instead blaming our neighbouring countries telling that they have done like this............we(Hindustan)need to learn and understand their intentions and concentrate our own nuclear technology and strategy development. First make ourself selfdefence so that no country in this world have guts to attack directly or indirectly.

Yawwnnnn...... same old bull shit.

Mr. by m on 17 Mar 2010

Yes, India developed and exploded the a-bomb way back in 1974. This was an indigenous r&d effort and an offshoot of the nuclear energy program. India should have paid China back in its owe coin by offering the design to Taiwan and Vietnam.

Half-truth by Devasahayam on 17 Mar 2010

Not only they provided blueprint, they straight-off also provided the device itself in SKD condition!

China by Sudhir on 17 Mar 2010

China & Pakistan are Real Wolves in Sheep's Clothings. They collaborate against India at all levels, be it Nuclear weapons, Terrorisom, Illegal Business etc. Pakistan Government can never be trusted. Indian Government should never talk to Pakistan Government, unless it shows real Honesty & destroys Terrorist Camps in its Land.

Indian should setup a parlimentary committe to review our relations with China by rajkumar on 16 Mar 2010

It is not shocking , China is the main culprit that has been hurting us for too long. 1. They armed pakistan. 2. They armed NE insurgency 3. We have to probe the Naxal connections 4. We have to probe the chinese agenda in Sri Lanka 5. We have to probe the Chinese agenda in Nepal 6. We have to probe the Chinese agenda in Myanmar 7. We have to probe the Chinese agenda in Banagaladesh 8. We have to view all this in the new prespective of Chinese claims over Arunachal. Are we missing a big picture.

Our policy makers should see this

THE PEANUT FARMER by Jatinder S Hoon on 16 Mar 2010

According to reliable sources, when President Jimmy Carter was told of Pakistan acquiring nuclear technology from China, his reply was, "it is peanut, compare to our friendship with Pakistan.Let them roast India."

Knowledge belongs to the world, not a monopoly of any individual or nations by campurtiga on 16 Mar 2010

This had been the case all the times, stealing technology and passing on to friends, Russians and the Israelis stole the technology from the US and the Russians passed on the information to China and probably India, and china passed the nuclear technology to Pakistan and Korea as then, China considered India as an adversary and Pakistan and Korea passed on the technology to Iran and the technology has spread to about 40 countries, in a way it is good because those countries which possess these weapons try to dominate the world and bully the weaker nations. Nuclear technology is a good deterrant similar to a gun. When only the cow boy holds the gun the Indians suffer and when the Indians also hold the guns a sort of calm prevails and the blood shed is reduced.

nuclear blueprint by harish on 16 Mar 2010

So what: India got its blue prints from USSR. All missile technology and so called R and D is all from USSR. Let us not be foolishly patriotic but know the truth. Indians are the same way as the Pakistanis. There is no difference.

No by Girish on 17 Mar 2010

India didn't get blueprint from USSR but India used the Canadian reactors provided for power generation to produce a bomb. And hence India was sanctioned. Giving a blue print is like teaching them how to make a weapon, without which pak would not have been able to make weapon for a long long time. But yes you are right it is not important now since they already have weapons and technology.

Nuclear India by bipin on 17 Mar 2010

harish did u get the inside information from the nuclear agency??? do u think that our scientists resort to these cheap tactics??? don't think that india is cheap and can resort to the same level as pakistan.

totally agree by shahrukh on 17 Mar 2010

i am totally agree with u harish,no doubt u r wise and intelligent.

Nuclear Blueprint by KP on 16 Mar 2010

For clarification India did not get Nuke blue print from USSR. India developed it themselves otherwise the net kiloton output in 98 would have been much better. Russia helped India with missile technology that too limited to only booster rocket.

Missile tech by Ash on 17 Mar 2010

The Missile tech that India Possesses was actually an indigenous effort of R&D.Yes india bought cheap entry level missiles frm the USSR, reversed them, and then after decades long R&D culminated into AGNI and PRITHVI series of missiles. No tech was provided by the USSR. If that was the case, Indias AGNI I would have been operational and inducted in the year 1985.AGNI III would not have to wait till 2010.

Excellent point KP by Devasahayam on 17 Mar 2010

I actually have seen the design of the 1974 device, including its trigger (which was a "clunker" when compared to a krytron--but was entirely fabricated in-house), courtesy of Dr. P.K. Iyengar (whom I knew when I lived in Mumbai). Nothing even remotely similar to USSR designs. Pakistan's designs on other hand, entirely Chinese--indeed, it is known that four of the six devices they exploded (and another four which fizzled entirely) were all PURCHASED straight from China!
