New Delhi, March 26: Already unhappy over pro-Tibet demonstrations in India, China has now made the security of the Olympic torch during its passage through this country an issue which has brought forth an assurance from the government that proper protection will be ensured for the flame.

In the wake of last Friday's incident when a group of Tibetan protestors stormed its Embassy, China is worried about the security of the Olympic torch that will go through India from April 17, sources said.

China is not even ruling out bypassing the country if it is not sure of foolproof protection, the sources said.

The Chinese Embassy has taken up the issue of security for the torch with the Indian government and the matter is under discussion, the sources said.

Top officials of the Embassy are engaged in talks with the authorities in the External Affairs Ministry and Indian Olympic Association about ensuring proper security for the torch, they said.

Asked about China's concern, National Security Advisor M K Narayanan said that the government will ‘make all arrangements to ensure that the Olympic flame passes through India safely’.

The Chinese side, which was earlier appreciative of the security arrangements made by India at the Embassy, has become doubtful about the protection of the torch after last Friday's incident.

boycott the torch by harsh on 27 Mar 2008

the important thing is for INDIAto insist that the torch is NOTsent thru India. Participate in the olympics, but protest the Tibetans issue in thisway. That is what ppl in San Francisco arecomtemplating, and shows confidencein ourselves.Remember, India is not on the defensive here,it is China!

China by Anant on 27 Mar 2008

As a NRI I am very ashamed indeed of the congress government. Congress have totally lost their self respect and also they have made every Indian ashamed of their own country. Manmohan Singh is a great reformer and a very intelligent man but he is a horrible leader. Either he has no guts or he is badly guided by the party. My heart cries out with shame as an Indian. China is trying to bully India now to ensure that India stays as their subservient in future. If congress party don't have any self respect they should at least allow Indian citizens some pride. India should not only tell China that they don't want the Olympic torch to go through India but also India should boycott the opening ceremony and all the athletes should wear black arm bands.

Olympic torch by satish on 27 Mar 2008

Why do we care if a bloody (Tibetian blood) torch goes through India or not? If it doesn't who cares? We can use that as an excuse to boycott the olympics. That way we kill two birds with a single stone. No waste of tax payer money on sending our underperfoming atheletes and their handlers on a boondoogle trip and show our genuine sympathy with the Tibetian people.

China, will it ignioe India ,in torch relaying? by NIRAJ SHAH on 27 Mar 2008

They can not.India is very important country today in the world

Figh back by Rock on 28 Mar 2008

Tibet issue is an internal. Why you guys want to interfere!? Mend your own business. If India don't want to join the Olympices. We are more than happy to accept. India isn't important, anyway, in any aspect.

India wins 400 medal in beijing olympics by Chinki Chan on 27 Mar 2008

What difference does it make if India boycotts olympics, as if we will go there and win 100s of medals.

Beijing Olympics by D S Goel on 27 Mar 2008

Letters to the Editor Sir, As an expatriate Indian I feel sad when I see my country behaving like a client state to an arrogant and expansionist China. In refusing to meet the Dalai Lama, President Pratibha Patil is following in the footspets of Nehru who was responsible for the greatest foreign policy blunder in independent India's history when he meekly accepted China's sovereignity over Tibet nearly six decades ago. The country paid the price in 1962 and thousands of square kilometers of our territory remain under Chinese occupation. The least that we can do now is to opt out of participation in the Beijing Olympics, quietly and without assigning any formal reason. It is the sovereign right of any nation to attend or not. Done with firmness and dignity, this will send out a strong message to the world. Nancy Pelosy did not hesitate to speak her mind in Dharamsala and Gordon Brown reiterated his resolve to meet the Dalai Lama in London in a few short weeks. Let us hope our leaders will draw the right lessons and behave like leaders of a proud and free nation, not like cowering Chamberlains of a vassal state. D S GoelColonel (Retired)New Zealand

India's interest is paramount by Manoj on 27 Mar 2008

Indian interests are paramount. Not China, not Tibet, not USAs. We must not forget how USA keeps attacking China (and provokes India to attack as well !!!) but will never stop the cheap imports from China to keep the American consumers happy ...

Passage of Olympic torch through India. by Neil Razdan on 27 Mar 2008

Well, this is easy! If chinese decide not to take the torch through India, then India is free to take decision on bycotting the Olympics in china. And if the wisdom prevails, and the Indian Sports authorities are not dying to go to china, then they will decide in favor of bycott.

India is Coward by Sonu Anand on 27 Mar 2008

Not Indians but congress is scared of china. Congress has always projected India as a week state. India can never be a world power rather we dont deserve to be a world power as all Indians are selfish and cowards.

Useless Torch by naresh on 27 Mar 2008

Stuff the torch in your rear President HU or WHO.

china by Arjun on 27 Mar 2008

First India needs to give up the beaten up mindset and east vs west ideology. Power hungry and shameless Congress under Left and Jihadi blackmail is again behaving like obideint cow in front of China. The precise mistake Nehru made by supporting china. We need to think in terms of our political expansion and our own world ambitions. By acting like a cow in the mosaic of so called EAST dictacted by china is not going to help India at all. India needs to stand-up, firm-up, actaully behave like a world power and not like third world state. Unless India and its coward leaders learns to be aggressive with China and with our looser neighbours, we can never ever be a world power.China poses a great threat to India's future as:1)China fearlessly claiming India's NE 2)China having direct boundry with Pakistan supplying it all arms for fight against India 3)betraying India in 1960s3) China controlling almost all rivers flowing into India from Tibet controlling agriculture, industries, p

boycot of olympics in china by trsubramanian on 27 Mar 2008

if china is worried about the torch relay in india equally are indian athelets to go china. if china cancells torch relay india should cancel sending the athelets to olympics in totto.

What India should Do by Vivek on 27 Mar 2008

I think India should do what China would do. It should use the Olympics as opportunity and move its troops near border and repeal the legislation disallowing other Indians settling in Arunachal, get Beharis in there. And buildup army near border. Maybe send its army into Nepal.

Torch Relay by Vasu on 27 Mar 2008

I fully agree that we should not be silent if China tries to stop the torch relay in India. However do our politicians have the guts to do it even when powerful counties like US are silent on this issue

Dont Compare US by Vivek on 27 Mar 2008

US is silent because China is not sitting right at its doorstep. US has enough guts to do the needful when it thinks it stands to "gain" by it. India is weak in every sense, even intellectually. It looks up to US to see if it is thinking right.

Boycott Chinese goods, products by Varun on 27 Mar 2008

China's achilles heel by Natarajan on 27 Mar 2008

China - such a powerful country, but so jittery about the pro-Tibet protests. Every country has a weakness, and this is China's. They are so paranoid. The game was all about showcasing China's emergence at the high table of world's power centers. The way things are going, it is just going to tarnish China's image inspite of a successful game. Don't pity China, because they secured the nomination for hosting based on certain promise they made to the west about improving human rights. They thought they could hoodwink the world by taking the cake but not paying for it.

China doesn't need reminder what it's past means to world. by janpad bisham on 26 Mar 2008

World looks at modern China with high expectations. Everyone is familiar with China, as everyone buys chinese goods. Only a charismatic, intelligent and deeply pro-human china can hope to gain respect of people of world. Olympic games is a god send opportunity to China, to prove that it is worthy of it's ancestor philosophers and accomplished humans second to none. It should show a distinct change, rather than revert to primitive language when stressed by political events.

Fortunate timing of events ! Is FORCEFUL patriotic education the answer. Is it less than brutal ? by Jind Kocho on 26 Mar 2008

There could not have been a better time for China to address and understand the Tibetan issue. Tibet was virtually annexed in 1950s by the then chinese politicia, as the country was undergoing a radical communist transformation without a second thought to cons and pros of such a system, as no other alternative seemed to make any practical sense. China was poor, and scared of western military might, and had to develop some civic system so radical that it could help it militarily; and in fact it itself turned out to be no less than a kind of mini martial law. Now every common chinese has a question at the back of their mind, whether such a system is still just in a more developed society; and world which no longer survives on conventional might, rather it is the terror of atomic weapons which balances the scales. It is high time to introspect, and give Tibetans their due dignity and recognition in a rational way. The chinese intelligentia for sure has not become bankrupt of ideas yet.

worth a worry by lobsang on 26 Mar 2008

the chinese should worry because india is india and not china.India has the basic fundamental rights to its citizens where as the chinese are deprived of that. this famous Indian proverb suits the situation-A dog is a lion in its territory

But... by Natarajan on 27 Mar 2008

Lobsang, you forget two things - tibetan refugees are not Indian citizens. So they do not get the fundamental right of speech like the rest of us. Second, our government is controlled by a Sino-Italian mafia (CPM-Cong alliance).

World community must think of Boycotting Chinese-Olympics... by KMR Overseas on 26 Mar 2008

simple message to contestants ::: Do not run for medal that tainted with Tibetans blood

Boycott the Olympics by SLB on 26 Mar 2008

The world governments and human-rights campaigners should re-examine their approach to the Olympics.  The best way to punish Chinese communists for their human-rights violation in Tibet is to boycott the Olympics. That will relieve many countries from providing foolproof security to those organizers who carry the Olympic torch on a trek that will take them to Tibet/China.

Kudos to mighty superpower Chin by J. Basu on 26 Mar 2008

Kudos to poeple's seclular democratic mighty superpower Chin who has slapped comnunal and regressib India hard in the face by not allowing Olympic torch to pass through the land infested by rubbish Tibetans. Under the leadership of Chini brother statesmen, Bamponth will fully support the Chinis by using their rule to put army against the protestors and send tanks like great Chini brothers democractically did in Tiannamen square and taught a lot of democracty to the stuedents there.

Chinese hypocracy by Indian on 26 Mar 2008

I have not seen a single country who hosted Olympics in past show hypocracy and high handedness as much as China has shown. Olympic games have a message to the world that the hosting country believes in peace and human rights. All other countries who hosted Olympics do not have dismal record as that of China. India is a great country that allows such protest and has the best hunman rights record and allows all religions to flourish. China does not under any circumstances. India should allow the Olympic torch to pass through but peacful protest to Chinese hypocracy should not be stopped. If you fall under Chinese pressure everytime then they'll brainwash you like they do in Tibet.
