"The completion of the civil nuclear deal will likely raise the confidence of the Indian defence establishment in the US as a reliable supplier and, therefore, set the stage for a much broader and deeper defence relationship between India and US over the next several years," Lisa Curtis of The Heritage Foundation has said in a Web Note.
Beijing may discuss in private and public forums the importance of simultaneous development of both India and China to try to show it welcomes India's rise. New Delhi, however, will pay closer attention to Beijing's actions along the disputed Indo-China border to gauge Chinese overall strategic intentions towards India.
"China's unhelpful stance at the recent NSG meetings on the Indo-US civil nuclear agreement was a reminder that Beijing remains uncomfortable with India's growing global role," Curtis said.
Washington needs to pay close attention to the dynamics of the Indo-China relations while the relationship between the world's oldest and the world's largest democracies grows.
"The future direction of relations between China and India, two booming economies that together account for one-third of the world's population, will be a major factor in determining broader political and economic trends in Asia directly affecting US interests," the South Asia scholar of the Conservative Think Tank said.
Trade between India and China has increased eight-fold in the last six years to almost USD 40 billion but both harbour deep suspicions of the other's strategic intentions.
Despite improvements in economic and trade relations, border disputes continue to bedevil Indo-China ties. India accuses China of illegally occupying more than 14,000 square miles of its territory on its northern border in Kashmir, while China lays claim to more than 34,000 square miles of India's northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh.
"India is a long-term host to the Dalai Lama and about 100,000 Tibetan refugees, although the Indian government forbids them from participating in any political activity" Curtis remarked.
Out of concern for Chinese sensitivities, the Indian government placed restrictions on Tibetan protesters in India during the uprising in Tibet, and Beijing praised New Delhi for preventing Tibetans from marching to the Tibetan capital of Lhasa.
The Indian political opposition, however, criticised Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for appeasing the Chinese and for not defending Tibetans' human rights.
"Renewed tensions in Tibet would likely put pressure on New Delhi to show greater solidarity with the Tibetan people.
China has recently started to raise the issue of the Dalai Lama's status in India in diplomatic talks for the first time in several years, indicating its increased concern over the issue," she added.
US's increasing attention to India over the past five years, especially Washington's decision to extend civil nuclear cooperation to New Delhi surprised Chinese policymakers and led them to reassess their policies towards India.
"Chinese officials have developed a more serious policy towards India and now acknowledge that India is becoming a major Asian power" Curtis said in her research note.

I am surprised at Indian government attitude towards Tibetians. I think government should take a tough stand and defend the Tibetian right of homeland. They are different race to Chinese and they have full right to live the way they want and not under dictorial ruler. The Chinese will do anything to pressurise Indian to block Tibetian. I don't trust chinese as they are cunning and will do anything to serve their cause by bulling, intimidating and pressurising. They are not prepare to move an inch from the land they are occupying and it is time the Indian government took a tough stand and tell Chinese that the the time has changed and we are not prepared to put up with your bullying tactics.
To be true, Indian territory extended around Mount Kailash and Mansarovar and entire of Tibet, Nepal and most parts of East-Asia during the Mahabharat period. Hence China shouid not only retreat from Tibet, but also return back the territory surrounding Mount Kailash and Mansarovar back to India, including other territories occupied over a period of time. If not today, we will certainly take back all our lost territories in the days to come. Hence, it is in China's best long term territorial integrity that it is high time it gave up its claims on Indian territories and better learn to live as a neighbour. Else, time wouid teach hegemonistic China a befitting lesson it would never ever forget.
China is a very dangerous neighbour and that country wants India to be destroyed by fighting through its proxy--Pakistan. India--Be ware
At last the Indian side and my country India have agreed and realised that China doesnt want to see India coming up economically. Hence, I wish that we Indians should have a fixed timetable for our plans atleast we should forsee the future now. Forget CPI(M) and BJP and the whole citizens in India knows that they are our stumbling blocks in development of India. But when the whole population is behind them(our country) nobody cannot say anything. Govt. Of India or the UPA should realise these points and do the needfull. Border issue with China, leave it, and if we become more powerful China automatically will bend its nerve to us. Hence, focus on development first. Good luck to India and for UPA.
Only way to crush China is DO NOT BUY any of their products and that will for sure bring them down or realize how important it is for them to have good relationship with its neighbors. They treat almost all of them in a bad way and they are using Pakistan to bring India's economy down and they are falling. Pakistan wake up before you are drowned competely. You will take longer time to recover if do not act now. Let us work together and grow.
I was in the IAF in 1962 when the Chinese launched an UNPROVOKED INVASION of India's northern borders! China ILLEGALLY OCCUPIES the north-eastern area of Kashmir
Well, all is said and experienced about China and Pakistan but alas! not properly understood and pragmatised. I do not know what happens to New delhi when some bold steps in time are required to be taken to hammer it down in to the minds of both of them that we are well aware, in spite of all their overtures, that in end they mean harm to us. Did you notice how easily both,
do the chinese really have the guts to fight i do not think sothese guys are petty traders good at blood suckingthey have nothing original so why bother
The Congress has made every one of us to hold our head downwards in shame by declaring to the world that any body can fool with us and get away with it. Since independence this has gone on so very smoothly (Congress is ver good at it) that we are not even averse to it any more ! If a minion like BD can dare us, China is much stronger an adversary. Do not underestimate your enemy, my dear. or be ready to pay a higher price ! Kick Gongress out of the Indian political scenario once for all. The elections are near and we have a very good chance to prevent this Nehru clan disgracing our country any more, right? Do not waste thsi opportunity is my most sincere appeal. Once for all get rid of them and give our children and next a chance for a better future..
What china assesing is to do with the north east as it wants a large chunk of indian soil in its empire. An i think no one can stop it in doing so....Only way to stop china by india is that they grow about 15% G.D.P per year for about 30 years.Only way to takle china or to become some near to its power becouse china is growing at a rate of about 13% per year an experts belive it could be much more in real
Our communists are also uncomfortable with India's rise. China and Indian communists want India to remain backward and underdeveloped.
Just shut up. Patriotism is not the same as capitalism. Communism is not China's gift to mankind. Don't forget many of our freedom fighters, including Netaji and Patel, were inclined more towards socialism unlike the hard-nut capitalists in power these days.
Enemy's enemy is a friend. For India this policy will pay good results. But we have to be cautious and guarded US does not take undue pressure on us and make us another pony like Pakistan. It would be worth for our policy makers to remember what benefit Pakistan and Afghanistan got after decades of alignment with the US.
Recently China and its defence think tanks which has no INDEPENDENT relations with Indian Seminarists echoed the view fed by its connection to western seminarists. TEACH INDIA A LESSON LIKE THAT OF 1962. It is tempting for China as the golbal melt down is affecting its factories and the restive rural Chinese can have an escape valve with limited war with India at Arunachal pradesh(southern Tibet as it calls them). India must be prepared for it now.It should use its airforce and navy and must not remain limited to Arunachal. As Pakistan is balckmailing us with chinese wink due to our better development we also must blackmail chinese better developped areas with our missiles.NOT LIMITED TO ARUNACHAL MUST BE OUR MESSAGE AND PREPARE FOR IT.
India is gaining in its stature and global recognition. Whether China likes it or not, India is going to have a status of a world power soon. China has failed in its games to contain India by supporting Pakistan. Even a blind freddy knows that China supports Pakistan with only one goal. That goal is to contain India. Its client state Pakistan does its bidding by sending the terrorists into India to harm it. Sooner our Pakistani neighbours understand the Chinese game and become wiser, the better would it be for Pakistan and India. Chinese leadership is anti-India and hates to see India grow. They are against us when India wants to become a permanent member of UNSC. They are against us when we want a deal with NSG for uranium supply. Its about time that Indian leadership should reprimand Chinese leadership if they talk about India in a dismissive fashion. We do need to believe in ourselves and deal with the world in a confident and assertive manner. Hindustan Zindabad!
