Chinese whispers in cellular market

Chandigarh, January 14 In a move to inundate consumers with a plethora of features on their mobile phones, different cellphone manufacturing companies are vying hard to retain their niche market segment. The market is flooded with phones of different features, colours and sizes and an individual can buy depending on his/her requirements. The latest entrant in the cellphone market is Chinese mobiles. Popularly known as Bengali mobiles, they are low priced but come without any warranty.

The China-made mobile phones come in different models though no specific name has been given to any of the models. The different sets resemble mobile phones of other big players in the market like Nokia and Sony. These phones come with dual batteries and chargers. Then there are models with dual sim facility too. It means two connections but one phone. This phone is priced at Rs 6,100. Its other features include a touch screen and an individual can also see television on it.

There is another phone that has 1.4 mega pixel camera and 1 GB inbuilt memory. Priced at Rs 5,300, it comes with touch screen facility. A mobile dealer in Sector-22 market says:” It’s only the Chinese mobiles that are selling like hot cakes these days. As they are priced nominally, customers do not mind spending money on a model that has varied features. More so, we have not received any complaints.”

The eye catchers

Though cellphone companies are leaving no stone unturned to woo prospective customers, Nokia’s E-51 has caught the fancy of the people. It comes with a route navigator and has a thin design. One can browse the web and email with a speed of 3G, HSDPA, or WLAN connections. It is also useful as the user can make low cost voice calls over Internet with the built-in WLAN. The camera has a 2 mega pixel camera with 4 x digital zoom and comes a FM visual radio. The phone also has the facility of video calling which is 3G comparable. The price ranges between Rs 12,500 to Rs 13,000.

The other available models are Nokia are 6500 (classic) and 6500 (slider), 5610 and E90. 6500 (slider) comes with a TV output and one can view live TV on the mobile phone itself. All these mobile phones except 6500 (classic) come with an expandable memory that varies from 2 GB to 4GB. However, 6500(slider) come with 1 GB internal built memory. The camera clarity is between 2 mega pixel to 5 mega pixel and the E-51 comes with carlzets lens by Sony.

Nokia E-90

Another latest mobile phone is a communicator and is known as the laptop in pocket. It is a 3G mobile with broadband connections for Internet browsing and file transfer. The phone enables an individual to open and edit documents and view email attachments.The phone comes with GPS technology. The phone comes with a 3.4 mega pixel camera.

Samsung offers G600 with slide open and 5 mega pixel camera. The camera has three modes- Panoroma, Mosac and micro mode. While using the Panoroma mode, a group picture can be clicked in three parts. Under mosac mode, nine shots can be taken together the micro mode can be used to focus someone particular in a group. It comes with a bluetooth and also has directed TV output. It has the facility of anti-shake video, has 55 MB phone memory that is expandable to 2 GB. The price for the phone is around Rs 17,000.

Less gives more

Besides the latest mobiles available in the market, there are low priced phones as well. There are mobile phones with big digits for the convenience of senior citizens. Priced between Rs 1,200 to Rs 3,000, they have basic features like coloured screen, FM and loudspeaker facility. These are also ideal for the people need phones for talking purpose only. Among these phones Nokia’s 1650, 1208 and 1200 have a high sale. While Samsung’s C140, C160 and C170 are equally popular.

Sukhwant Singh, a Nokia, representative said, “The sales of Nokia phones have spiralled and the graph will remain the same in the coming months. Chinese mobiles are an absolute waste of money as they come without any guarantee.”

Varun Kant, sales representative at Bombay Photo Sales, in Sector 22, says, “The market is flooded with phones and consumers have all the freedom to pay for features they require. The industry is expected to grow by leaps and bounds in the near future.”
