Panaji Noted filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt said cinema has helped bridge the gap between India and Pakistan as people from both sides of the border have realized how similar their lives are.

"When you tell a story about your part of the world to others, people wake up to the reality of how similar we all are. And that brings them closer," Bhatt told reporters here.

Bhatt, who was here to address a press conference announcing the fourth edition of South Asian Film Festival slated to begin in Goa next week, said Indian cinema has made inroads into every household of Pakistan.

"They love Indians and Indian cinema...because of our movies and that's a fact," he said.

"I think we (filmmakers) have a soft power. Even Indian government is waking up to the power of cinema. The product of art has capacity to bring human beings together," he said.

Hi Mahesh Butt, you are doing a great job of bridging two different society's together I myself being a muslim and broad minded intellegent person can forsee the future of being united together once again. However small minded people who only see shortcommings and are selfish to their own idealology may not see that the muslims in India where once natives of India and that they have contributed to India in many ways. Muslims during partition took nothing from India infact they left everything in India during their depature, if they have any grudges then they should vent it out towards the British who squandered their wealth and resources and left Indians to indirect SLAVERY hence call centres and importing cheap goods. Muslims gave India dignity which they have lost through favouritism of the British rule-only time told the true legacy of British rule and any anyway good luck to the Indian Hindus may you worship manmade Idols and keep those manufacturers employed.

Bhatt is a muslim by Jeev on 18 Jun 2009

Fellow Indians, Mahesh Bhatts mother is a muslim lady. His Father, Nanubhai bhatt married a muslim woman and hence Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt are half-muslims and subsequently have muslim/Paki sentiments. You should see his interviews on popular paki shows and lambasts Indian mentality. He is of course shame for India as are so many others - Testa Setalvad, Nandita Sen, Arundhati Roy, Rajdeep Sardesai and so on.

This chalu prasad of bollywood needs to be pulled and thrown along with terrorist in an encounter by jigna on 18 Jun 2009

This guy should be a victim of terrorism then he will understand the feelings of Indians (there are exceptions to the rule). Why this idiot butt throw all these taxi drivers who are parked in bandra their taxis with gaudy stinking upholstery are in reality terrorists. I agree with all the readers comments and we unify and ban his movies so he will be forced to leave our country and get gunned down across LOC by the stink asses porkis and talibans. He doesn't have a right to live in freedom and luxury when his brothers sobs are losing their blood. Go and help them you b....d.

Cinema has bridged gaps between India and Pak by Vasoo Kamulkar on 18 Jun 2009

Mahesh Bhatt, like Aurangzeb; is the product of a Hindu-Muslim co-habitation. He should try to do two things : (a) strike a conversation with any Muslim taxi-driver in Mumbai and try to understand his hostile feelings about India. (b)To understand FULLY about the Muslim psyche, Bhatt should read Arun Shouri's books, The World of Fatwa and The Indian Controversies. If after all this, Bhatt still remains blissful about Muslim behaviour then he should pack his bags and leave for Pakistan with Pooja and his brother. They will not need any visa. No need to buy return tickets. If at all his conscience compels him to do some service to the people from his father's side, he should use his pull over the Pakistani public and make arangements for the permanent abode for Antonia Maino-Vincy and her brood.

Bhatt shut your BUTT by Arthur on 18 Jun 2009

I cannot unerstand Bhatt statement. I think bhatt should go to pakistan and do the film if he has gutts upto his butt. He will have original people actors, sites and locations plus talaban bodyguards . Bhatt you are gone out of yr head. Why dont you make a film on MENTAL MIND and u can b a leading hero and director. Youll have plenty of requird crew to make the film in swat valley. What gap u are talking off. closing on LOC. u r only interesred on making quick buks and then sleeping on slain dead bodies of mu Indian Brothers

Mr. Mahesh Bhatt, you must cross over the bridge to Pakistan by rajmohan k on 18 Jun 2009

Mr. Bhatt, you always been a supporter of Pakistan, now that you found the gap has been bridged between Pakistan and India, please cross over to Pakistan and then destroy that bridge, so that you never return to India, you BIG TRAITOR!

Mahesh bhatt - untrustworthy by Indian on 18 Jun 2009

Mahesh Bhatt is a disgrace. The guy is forever supporting pakistan despite they killing thousands of indian citizens through terrorism. He is an anti-national in disguise. This guy was also very keen to make a movie on benazir bhutto as if she was some messiah for india. The lady was one of the biggest proponents of bleeding India through terrorism and would be too happy if india got nuked. Such dellusioned people get too much media space as if they are too intelligence where as in reality they have a very narrow, parochial anti-national view on everthing. Beware of this guy.

when would you shut up mr bhatt

Dream gen by chanakya on 18 Jun 2009

This man lives in the past. He has lot of soft corner for his pakistan friends and eternally believes that it is India which is at fault and not the other side. In his biased view he thinks proudly that his field has done lot to unite the two populations. Rediculous thoughts ! How can a singer or an actor can influence hard core terrorist rulers to become goats. Ultimately it is the leader ship which matters and not the bunch of music lovers who at the best can shut their doors and sleep comfortably. There is disagreement between Pakistan and India leaderships on various fronts and it is funny to think that all that will be dissolved by Mumbai film makers. Film makers can dream and dream wildly ,with out ever making statements on political arena.
