Ludhiana, June 18 Till about a year and a half ago, Yuvraj Sehdev, a student of Ryan International School, would fly a remote control plane gifted to him by his father. The then 12-year-old would often dream of flying a real aeroplane on his own.

He achieved his dream early and was awarded a co-pilot licence on June 16 by Airtime Canada.

“I was determined to fly high in the sky. I used to imagine about how a plane takes off and lands. June 16 was the biggest day of my life. I flew the plane on the instructions of pilot accompanying me.”

Yuvraj was a part of 11 students who were selected from Ryan International Schools across the country to participate in the 16-day aviation and leadership camp of Airtime Canada. The school was a co-sponsor of the programme.

Deepa Gupta, School Senior Supervisor, Ryan International School, Ludhiana, said, “When we selected Yuvraj for this camp, we were not sure of his caliber as looked too small for it. The determined boy proved us wrong and we are proud of him. The school will continue to initiate such activities for the children.”

Yuvraj said: “I had no experience when I went for the camp at Ground School known as Airtime School Mapel Ridge in British Columbia in Canada. Some senior pilots trained us about flying and the functioning of an aeroplane. We were taught the special language which pilots use while flying along with lot many functions of a plane. It was followed with a written and practical test along with the senior-most pilot of Airtime Canada. I was sure of my success after the exam.”

He now wants to join the Indian Air Force as a pilot. “I have interacted with many army and India Air Force personnel. I want to go to Kargil and have a first-hand experience about the Indian Army and the Air Force,” Yuvraj said.

His favourite subject is mathematics. Fond of swimming, water skiing and flying, Yuvraj was also selected in the football team of his school last year and visited London in 2007 for soccer.

Overwhelmed by his son’s success, Yuvraj’s father Harinder Singh, a businessman, said, “Yuvraj was given a VVIP treatment by Kingfisher when he reached Bombay Airport. I have contacted the flying club authorities of Sahnewal for his further practice.”
