Pune, March 20 For Dr Rahul Patil, a novel vascular interventional technique on a 56-year-old patient who suffered from total blockage of arteries in both of the lower limbs, earned him not only worldwide acclaim but the prestigious global award at Singapore Live-2008 for the best young interventional cardiologist.

Patil was presented the award at the 17th annual conference organised by the National Heart Centre at Singapore from March 6 to 9 for his case presentation- Innovative Angioplasty technique for per moral iliac Angioplasty.Patil told media persons about the angioplasty done for the legs. This vascular disease is common in patients with diabetes, hypertension and who are smokers. Due to these symptoms there is a decrease in blood supply to the legs and conventionally surgery is the only solution.

However in conventional surgeries, the hospital stay is of 10 days with several stitches and the added risk of anaesthesia, says Patil. In an angioplasty there are no stitches and the hospital stay is just three days. What is done is that the femoral artery is punctured and a balloon thrombectomy catheter is introduced. The balloon is inflated and the occlusion in the legs is removed and flow of blood supply is established, explains Patil who has done this angioplasty of the legs for nine patients so far.

Patil received this award from among 46 case studies that were presented and the age limit of the participants was less than 40 years of age. Three doctors were selected from India that included Pune's Dr Patil who is a consultant at Ruby Hall Clinic. The award was presented by Prof. Dr.Koh Tian Hai, Course Director, Medical Director , National Heart Centre. Other participants were from countries like China , Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and Australia.
