Ludhiana, December 21 A Team from Guru Nanak Public School, Sarabha Nagar has been selected to take part in the Fourth Annual Asian Regional Space Settlement Design Competition, which is organised by NASA. The contest, to be held from January 3 to 9 at Om Shanti Retreat Centre, Gurgaon, will be organised by Atlantis Research, New Delhi on behalf of NASA.

Principal, Guru Nanak Public School, R S Gill, said, “The team comprises 9 students and three advisers. The competition is a high-intensity intellectual experience that emulates real proposal teams in industry. The theme of the project is that by 2067, NASA is to establish a space colony as the earth will be rendered unsuitable for human beings. This colony will be situated between Mars and Jupiter, close to the asteroid belt,” said Grewal.

The students of GNPS secured the 10th position in the Asian region. GNPS, along with Vivek High School, Chandigarh and Research Academy, Lahore will be part of one company, Grumbo Aerspace. The company will give a final presentation and compete with three others.

“The companies securing first and second position will proceed to Johnson Space Centre, Houston to participate in the final round in July 2008. The third company will have to modify its project,” said Kuldeep Singh Grewal, one of the advisers of the GNPS team and Head of the school’s Physics Department.

The other two advisers are Neha and Kanwar Nihal Singh, both students of Electronic Engineering at Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala. The duo has already visited NASA.

Meanwhile, the students are confident of a victory. While six of them are Class X, three are from Class XI.

Jasmandeep Kaur, a Class X student, said, “I have worked on the human factors for the project. The living conditions were proposed by me. I am sure we will win”.

“I planned the operations at the space colony, like the transportation and communication system. With just a few days left, we will have to work in a more innovative manner,” said Jupinder Singh, another Class X student, who is a part of the team. Preetanjan Singh worked on automation, like robots and other machines for connecting the space colony with other planets. Gitanjli Jazuriya worked on planning for human factors like entertainment, zero gravity games. Another member, Gurleen Kaur, said she had met Sunita Williams during the latter’s India visit. She planned Bellevistat’s basic design. The other members are Mansangam Jit Singh of Class X, Gurkirat Singh, Ruskin Singh and Guneet Kaur, of Class XI.
