Modelled in the lines of the Malaysian fire and rescue department, the red bikes were introduced for the first time in India. Equipment for the bikes was imported from Finland.

“These motorbikes, armed with fire-fighting instruments, will help increase our operational capabilities. These bikes will be deployed in the Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazaar, Old Delhi and trans-Yamuna areas, which are congested,” Delhi Fire Service Chief R C Sharma said.

Sharma said two personnel will be deployed per Royal Enfield motorbike, which will be fitted with a tank that can carry up to 50 litres of water. “The instruments are based on Water Mist Technology that prevents the wastage of water, unlike traditional fire extinguishers. The entire set-up costs Rs 7,50,000 and we now have 10 such bikes. Each bike has equipment that has the capacity of dousing fire in one shop,” he said.

Sharma added the same motorbikes will also be used at the Commonwealth Games venues. “We will deploy these motorbikes inside the stadiums for quick mobility and immediate action,” he added. “Before the 2010 Games all the fire fighting vehicles will be fitted with Global Positioning Systems as well.”

The Delhi Fire Service has also launched a well-equipped German Arial Ladder Platform (ALP) and a ‘Rope Rescue System’, based on French technology, in its unit. “Until now we could conduct fire rescue operations only up to 60 m. With the new equipment, we hope to double that,” Sharma said. Fire officials added that they will also set up new fire stations and control rooms around all Games stadiums. Special training will also be provided to personnel in charge of emergency operations.
