The tunnel will be completed in 39 months at the cost of Rs 155 crore by Patel Pratibha joint venture under the Center’s Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. The alignment of 3.625 tunnel is passing below the sea for a stretch of 1km. With the use of advanced technology — modern dewatering system with discharge capacity of 20,000 liter/minute — possibility of heavy entrance of water in the tunnel will be avoided. The tunnel will be around 65 meter underground and will be constructed using Tunnel Boring Machine.
On its completion, water supply in the areas which receive water from Malabar Hill Reservoir (MHR) will increase. These include Kalbadevi, Dhobitalao, Thakurdwar, Boribunder, Fort, Backbay, Colaba, Nariman point, Cuffe Parade and military areas.
