The Pune Municipal Corporation’s plan to take over the historical Bhidewada — where Savitribai Phule had started the first school for girls in 1848 — and preserve it as a national monument has run into administrative hassles. Municipal Commissioner Praveensinh Pardeshi is approaching the State Government on the issue instead of directly deciding to take custody of the building.
The PMC had earlier passed a resolution in the standing committee and general body meetings to take over the Bhidewada and develop it as heritage structure while urging the Union and state governments to declare it as national monument. A provision of Rs three crore had been made for the purpose in the annual budget of 2008-09.
In a letter submitted to the standing committee, Pardeshi said the relevant financial provision has been made by PMC to take over the historical structure, but most of the area in and around wada has already been developed while the ownership issue of remaining area is pending in the court. Also, the state government has conveyed to Mayor Rajlaxmi Bhosale that Bhidewada cannot be declared as protected monument. Thus, the PMC needs to bring all the facts to the notice of the government for suggestions, Pardeshi said. The PMC had promised to restore the past glory of the Bhidewada.
Savitribai Phule, wife of social reformer Mahatma Jotiba Phule, had started the first school for girls at Bhidewada in Budhwar Peth on January 1, 1848. The school, named after the owner of the property, Tatyarao Bhide, is in a pathetic state. There has been a constant demand to declare it a heritage structure. Various organiations had taken out a rally demanding a status of a heritage for the Bhidewada.
