Mumbai, July 15 The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has proposed to take up repairing work of five railway overbridges on Central and Harbour lines which are in dilapidated condition.

The proposal has been tabled with the standing committee and is expected to come up for discussion on Wednesday. Around 160 kms of water pipelines pass through these bridges and failure to repair them could result in collapse of 40 per cent of water supply and railway services.

These ROBs are located at Nahur, Chembur, Bhandup and two at Ghatkopar railway station. Civic officials, after inspection, identified that iron part of the bridges had rusted and base structure along with the covering of pipelines needed strengthening.

Moreover, BMC officials have been receiving complaints from elected representatives and citizens about the condition of the ROBs.

In a proposal tabled with the civic Standing committee, the civic body has said that the ROBs are in extremely dilapidated condition and in case the pipelines burst then 40 per cent of water network can be disrupted.

Although the repairs of the ROBs are to be carried by railway authorities, the BMC has been requested to carry out the work. Accordingly, the civic administration has agreed to carry out the work after railway’s handed the No Objection Certificate.

The civic administration will incurr over Rs 36 lakh expenditure for the repair and strengthening work but the railways has agreed to repay the amount after completion of the work.
