Kolkata, February 18 The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is likely to introduce disaster management courses in the schools run by the civic body from the next academic session.

“In all probability, this will be done from the next financial year,” said Sabyasachi Dey, chief manager of KMC’s education and social sector department.

The department is at present discussing the proposal with the state government, he added.

According to a state government circular, the inclusion of disaster management techniques in the syllabus of KMC schools is a must.

As of now, teachers of such schools are undergoing disaster management training. Funded by KMC, officers from the state fire and emergency department and volunteers of St John’s Ambulance Association are at present imparting training to KMC teachers.

The training has been divided into two phases. The first phase is a “subjective test” session, where the teacher has sit for an examination. This will exhibit the teacher’s ability to manage her students during emergencies.

In the second phase, teachers will be taught how to use the staircases and sheds of the school building in case of a fire or earthquake.

“After training, these teachers will teach the same to the students. For this, two periods will be slotted every week,” Dey said.

“The first phase of the training is already over. Over 100 teachers belonging to 242 corporation schools have received the training,” said Kalyani Mitra, Member, Mayor-in-Council of the education department.

While teachers belonging to corporation schools located in Khidderpore, Mominpur and Behala have already received the training, teachers from the remaining schools will do so in the next one month.
