Clamour for Bharat Ratna goes online

New Delhi, January 20: As the clamour for Bharat Ratna gets noisier by the day, the supporters of various contenders for the highest civilian honour have gone online to show solidarity with their icons.

Taking a cue from Leader of the Opposition L K Advani's move to demand the award for former Prime Minister and BJP veteran Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Pune-based BJP youth wing BJYM has launched an online petition addressed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that the honour be conferred to him.

The group has also constituted an online community called ‘Give Bharat Ratna to Atalji’ on Orkut, a social networking website fast becoming popular among all age groups.

"Honourable Atal Bihari Vajpayee is a jewel in India's crown. His followers have conferred their own Bharat Ratna to him. Still, it would be doing yeoman's service to this shining light if the government gets its act together and confers this highest civilian award to him, although late in the day," says the petition that is doing the rounds on the web.

The Vajpayee fan club on the web is a 6,191-member-strong group.

"Atalji deserves this," write one Yogesh Pathak, a member of `Atalji Bihari Vajpayee Fan Club'.

The ardent fans of veteran Left leader Jyoti Basu, who has been outrightly refusing any interest in awards, are also making their presence felt on the Internet.

Only person who deserves the award is Shri Mohammad Rafi Sahab. I pray for some sense in the panel that takes this decision.

the only real person who can claim to be a ratna(Jewel) of Bharat(India)'s crown is one and only Rafi sahab. his art made India proud in the court of whole world. A ture leged in singing and a pious saint , Rafi sahab is he icon muslim youth needs in todays presence of laden and terrorism. conferring Him BR is the rightest signal govt can send to the leaderless muslim youth and also can indiacate that the love for humanity is the way to divinity. A true Gandhian and teetotaller Rafi sahab was a religios musalman but rendered bhajans with equal ese and passion. Isnt that the best way proving the indian motto of unity in diversiy??

Dr. G.S Sirohi, first Indian on Antarctica, a place named after him in Antractica by USA was never awarded any Ratna by Indian Government. Shame . He spent his life serving India.http://www.geocities.com/amitasirohi/

Bharat Ratna was primarily meant to be awarded to people who serve the country in a distinguished manner. This is not just for politicians. We need to look at all distinguished people from all walks of life and then pick from that group. I am shocked and ashamed to see that people such as Kanshi Ram and other politicians were being recommended for this award. Please have some respect for this award.

MANNIYA SHRI ATAL BIHARI VAJPAYIJI IS ONE OF THE MOST DISTINGUISHED PALIAMENTARIAN OF THE LAST 55 YEARS. HE HELD THE PREMIERSHIP WITH GREAT DISTINCTION AND POLITICAL COURAGE AND ACUMEN. HE WITHOUT DOUBT DESERVES THE ACOLADE OF BHARAT RATNA. PRESENT GOVERNMENT SHOULD SHOW SOME POLITICAL BROADMINDEDNESS IN HONOURING HIM WHILST HE IS STILL ALIVE.
