Mumbai Two days after reaching a seat sharing pact with the BJP, the Shiv Sena on Sunday once again came out in strong support for a Marathi prime minister and asked its saffron ally to clarify its stand on the issue.

In an article published on Sunday in the Sena mouthpiece 'Saamana', the party's spokesperson Sanjay Raut has come out in strong support of having a Maharashtrian as the PM and criticised MNS chief Raj Thackeray who has ridiculed the possibility of NCP supremo Sharad Pawar becoming the PM.

Later, in a press conference in Mumbai, he said "BJP should clear it's stand about Marathi manoos for the top job. Senior leaders in the state like Munde and Gadkari would not like if a Marathi grabs the post."

Raut, however, agreed that as his party is a part of NDA, it would support Advani for the post. "But if someone thinks that a Marathi does not deserve the top job then they should dare to declare it publicly," he said, adding "The issue of a Marathi prime minister should not be ridiculed in Maharashtra at least".

Statements from the Sena supporting Pawar for the PM's post had created a fissure in the saffron alliance which got diffused after the two parties reached a seat-sharing pact two days ago. But party sources fear that repeated statements from the Sena on the Marathi PM issue may deepen the rift.

Shameless Politicians by Nitin Khanna on 26 Apr 2009

At least the post of the PM should not be looked at from a demographic viewpoint! It is amazing that both Raj Thackeray and the Shiv Sena want to bring forth a point which is extremely political in nature all in the wrong sense of the word. Of course, these people are visibly power-mongers who care for nothing more than their positions. The PM for India is for the whole of India and is not a CM that a Label should be put on him/her.

Shiv Sena by Sanil on 16 Mar 2009

Which of the Marathi Manoos will they make PM? The toilet cleaner Sanjay Raut? the Peon Raj Thakre? or their chief goon Ball Takre? And the educated Maharastrian already knows what a big B Sharad Pawar is- from street boy to Millionaire by looting the masses- the Marathi manoos. Will the real marathi manoos please stand up for your rights???

IT IS TIME FOR ADVANI TO STEP DOWN AND MAKE BJP TRULY A MEMBER OF SANGH PARIVAR. by Aniyan on 16 Mar 2009

Shri Advani, With all respect to your commendable, long public life and as a good parliamentarian, it is now time to say that, you are a failure in BJP's nomination as PM candidate. Ever since this is done, the allies have been leaving the NDA. Within the BJP, all was not well and the unity is under threat. Why do you do this sin to the party, which you and Atalji invented 20 years back? You are pretty old and you are not the one the BJP want it to lead. There is clear opinion on this within the ranks and within us, the well wishers of the party. The effort of BJP to go hand in hand with those who do not have identical policy is harming irrepairably. Example is Orissa and Bihar. The sooner BJP withdraws from coalition, the better it is. And go alone as a party with difference; not with scores of leaders who compete with each other for power and authority viz. Jaswant Singh, Arun Jaitley, Yashwant Sinha and others. This is a party of Sangh family not of refugees.

Clarify stand on 'Marathi PM': Sena to BJP by Uday Bhan on 16 Mar 2009

If there is no possibility of Marathi P.M Is SHIV SENA , MNS and NCP going to work against India or they are going to rename Maharasthra as Republic of Maharasthra. Mr.Raut Thackery and Pawar wake to youth call. Stop dividing the country on regional wise. I understand no caste base and religion base politics are slowly evading you have picked up this MARATHI. Been an Indian i have no same in saying JAI HIND and JAI Maharastra.

Marathi President by Ramesh on 16 Mar 2009

I had respect for Marathis (I am not a marathi). But that is now going down the drain. They are setting a benhcmark on how deeper they could sink. They insisted on a Marathi President, and are now insisting on a Marathi PM. Just what do they think of themselves?

MARATHI PM by Niranjan on 16 Mar 2009

MARATHI PRESIDENT, MARATHI PM! WHAT IS THIS? NEXT THEY WILL WANT ALL THE CABINET MINISTERS MARATHI ONLY AND OF COURSE ALL MPSs HAVE TO BE MARATHI ONLY. WHAT DIVISIVE POLITICS! GOD SAVE THE MOTHERLAND!

Clarify stand on 'Marathi PM': Sena to BJP by Bimal Prasad Mohapatra on 16 Mar 2009

First, it was language, then regionalism, then after religion and now castism and sectarianism. All the isms invented by politicians with opportunistic sheds have raised their ugly head. All these now trying to tear the colourful sari of Mother India. Who is the mother of all these unfortunate phenomena? Is it the product of intellectual bankruptcy of our intellectual community which was very active during freedom movement but slept after that? Had they been active then after like it happened in USA India would not have so bad place now and slogan like 'Manoos' would not have any place. USA, a country of migrants mostly from fragmented and quarrel some eighteenth century Europe and Black from dark Africa having no civilisational synergy could manage their affiars, live togather and grow, why can not India? Their intellectuals were active, selfless and not parochial and remain guardful to their nation's affairs. They did prevent any corrupt encroachment to politics. Let's think.

For sakhram PM request Sonia not BJP by rabi on 16 Mar 2009

Either RR Patil, SIBRAJ PATIL or PRATIBA PATIL or Raj takray CAN BE PROMOTED TO SKARAM PM OF INDIA. But you must request Supremo Sonia Gandi rader than requesting BJP.

The Pawar Dream! by Murali Panicker on 16 Mar 2009

The BJP should not have any alliance with the NCP on account of this STUPID remark. The Sena leader is sure that Mr Pawar will not get a Prime Ministership or a Dy Prime Ministership if he join hands with any other parties. That is why this stupid bargain with the BJP. Mr Advani has been chosen, months back, if the BJP comes to power and the party should not be under any types of pressure on the question of prime ministership.

mad sanjay raut by rthr on 16 Mar 2009

Marathi Prime Minister by Shri Dixit on 15 Mar 2009

Shiv Sena as a party had displayed inconsistency in the support of "marathi manus" and gave party tickets to "non-marathi" people who ultimately ditched them! Also, intense "in-fighting" amongst marathi leaders of various colours and community in general (historical evidences) show very little chance of a true marathi occupying prime minister's position in the near future. Maharashtra has done so much in defending hindus elswhere from mogal atrocities and fought bravely in world wars and wars agains China and Pakistan. In spite of all that background people from north and south alike have kept "grudge" against marathi community in general. Even person like Y.B.Chavan, who salvaged the sitaution in war against China in 1962 and successfully led Indian forces upto Lahore by opening another front in western theater, was "blocked" by Kamaraj and Indira Gandhi from being a prime minister. Nehru's animosity towards Maharashtra is well established by now!

Why these Netas are like this by Rajesh on 15 Mar 2009

Mr. Raut? Is there a little sense remains in you? Do you think people of Maharashtra are all illiterate? You don't know what the entire media and so called secularists says about your sivsena and mr.Thakare?Any defeat to NDA will termed as failure of Hindtwa? Do you want to hear that? every body knows what behind yor love for Maharashtra P.M .Dont think that 2009 is 1947 or 80s

Indian PM and Shiv Sena by Babu on 15 Mar 2009

Let us have an Indian as our Prime Minister. Not Marathi, Gujarati, or Punjabi. Let us think as Indians. I am really at loss to understand how a national party like BJP can join hands with Shiv Sena , whose India is Maharashtra, and nothing more than that. Hell with Shiv Sena and the thakereys.

Marathi Pride!! by A.N. Pankajakshan Pillai on 15 Mar 2009

Maharashtrians want to rule the whole country from Delhi by having the President and Prime Minister from Maharashtra, whereas they do not want North Indians to be in Mumbai. What a mean-minded attitude of irresponsible politicians!! It is high time we think about India and not states and regions.
