US Defence Secretary Robert Gates, who held wide-ranging talks with Defence Minister A K Antony, said the nuclear agreement has ‘positive global consequences’ besides serving the interests of both the countries.
"The clock is ticking in terms of how much time is available to get all the different aspects of an agreement implemented," Gates said.
He did not specify any time period during which India needed to take the steps like firming up the IAEA safeguards and seeking waiver from Nuclear Suppliers Group, though Washington has been insisting that these be concluded by July.
Without directly mentioning the stiff opposition by Left parties to operationalisation of the nuclear deal, Gates said the US respects India's internal politics and hopes that the government would resolve the issue in time.
He, however, was quick to add that failure of the nuclear deal would have little impact on the deepening military ties.
The US Defence Secretary met senior BJP leader L K Advani, whose party is also opposing the deal, in an apparent bid to seek his support.
During his two-day stay, Gates also met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

The very fact that India will be under the mercy of the US president for whatever justification or rationalisation one attributes to the 'objectionable' clauses of the Hyde Act, should itself be a sufficiently valid reason to reject the deal as it stands today. Further, it is a simple legal position that the provisions of the enabling legislation will prevail in case of contradictions in the agreement based on that legislation. So the argument that India is only bound by the 123 is superfluous. Whether or not the deal delivers any real benefit for India, if the deal is terminated by the US by any president for any reason whatsoever, the net effect will be a significant number of Indian reactors (14 out of 22) under the IAEA safeguards in perpetuity. The future president need not differentiate whether or not some of the clauses of the Hyde Act are non-binding provisions. That means he/she could take India's failure to report activities regarding its indigenous program involving Thorium as a ‘failure’ to comply with the deal. Signing into the NPT under another less attractive pretext ! What a deal !

India should understand that any deal means business and business doesn't mean you can sit on decisions indefinitely.Have observed some blggers get disturbed even if one american speaks up anything on the deal. why is that? They have spent months on making the deal and they have got every right to express and convey their opinions. If we Indians cant accept that also then we are not fit to sign any deal with any country.
The deal is DEAD and ABORTED.Clock is ticking ONLy for the Yanks. Negotiations are not done by compromising especially on the element,"TIME". USA simply wants to bully India into submission,as it has done to all its "other",lackeys. The various visits,the intense pressure coupled with INTIMIDATION,shows that the DEAD and ABORTED deal is favourable ONLY to the USA,thanks the Hyde Act.The USA is behaving like Dr Jekyll!
who is bullying India.. They are just expressing their opinions.. Merely expressing opinions doesn't mean pressurizing.. If we go by that logic then we should not sign any deal with any country.. If India doesn't want it they can throw away the deal.

It is better not to proceed with the Nuclear Agreement with US since it is going to benefit only the suppliers who are going to make money.The money involved is huge and India cannot afford to make up the amount even for decades together.I agree with the Left leaders on this issue.You should make the Nuclear Scientists to work hard on the indigenisation and all the Engineers working in the Central PSUs/Undertakings should work towards indigenisation so that the country does not depend on the advanced countries anymore.Maruti is an example for goal towards indigenisation.Our resources are scarce.We should work towards product quality, safety and look towards alternate sources.
Yes indeed it is a positive global consequence provided it doesn't curtail India's right to test and develop nuclear weapons. if it is with an intention to hood-wink India into signing this and then imposing Hyde act, then it would be same as NPT.... which we shouldnt sign.
