On Thursday afternoon, teachers at the Meridian International Hotel School were called to a meeting and within minutes were told they had lost their jobs.
“They said they do not have enough funds to pay us and we would have to leave straight away,” Terrence D'Souza, who taught commercial cookery there, said.
Ten private colleges catering to international students have been closed down this year in Australia.
The Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority said the immediate priority was to ensure students doing VCE exams experienced no disruption.
“The VRQA has sent senior staff to the secondary school today to ensure that all VCE examination papers are secured and that students are properly briefed on the situation and where they will be undertaking their examinations,” Director Lynn Glover said.
Australian Education Minister Julia Gillard on Thursday said the Government took the reputation of the 16-billion-dollar industry ''very seriously'' and was reviewing the laws that governed it.

I have lived and worked in Canada, USA now the UK. Indians have relocated to all these destinations in huge numbers. The one consistent story with them is their inevitable fake degrees and qualifications. They are now swamping the USA, they have swamped the UK and are in the process of doing the same to Canada. However, the quality of their degrees now is regarded as so dubious, that most employers have no faith in them. I would rank the Indians with the Nigerians in terms of scammers in this regard. Pity really as they seem like a pretty decent bunch, just caught up in trying to get out India and compete in the first world.

Australia has been soliciting overseas students just on the temptation of a PR. If you read through the reports produced by Monash Uni professor whose name i cant recollect, the primary reason is P.R.It is an existing evidence. 10 years before, when the temptation of PR did not exist, hardly anyone came to australia. Australia has been involved in the largest ponzi scam of getting overseas students on false and misleading promise of a PR which now to their convenience, they have changed the goal post.

To say the least, not most indians living and working in india and the rest of world have decended from convicts who were sent there to clear the passage of occupution of aboriginal land, natural resources and cultute. The same can not be said of the aussies. However indians at home should learn to look after the NRIs living and working india and rest of world. STRONG REGULATOR NEEDED Lot of frauds are being detected pertaining to admission of Indian students in foreign institutions. Very recently the happenings in Australia where the touts have been luring Indian students for admission in Australia has landed hundreds of them in trouble. The closure of dozen of such colleges and institutions in Australia has put a question ark on the life of these innocent students. They even after spending thousands of dollors are running from pillar to post. In this drama and going on rackets, the touts and middlemen heading faked agencies are getting fat. It is the high time the Government of India steps in and a strong regulator is appointged making it mandatory that all students going abroad should channel their applications through this regulating agency. There is no end to frauds and growing discontentment is adversely affecting the thousand of young students.
What the poor students who sell everything to study abroad beggars belief. But this is the result of illiteracy. Forge Australia, there are hundreds of sleazy institutes in London alone that offer supposedly world class qualifications and one finds Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Brazilians etc paying through their nose to eucate themselves at these places. Bhagat Singh and Dyal Singh colleges, looked dwn by the well heeled in Delhi offers a much better standard. The Indian governmnt should encourage colleges in metro cities to open branches in rural areas and put a halt to poor Indians from going abroad to no good universities. The touts, both foreign and Indian should be hauled up and made to pay back students who have lost their all by investing for a future in these institutes in Australia that have gone into administration. Will the Australians refund these suckers from India?
No college degree would automatically qualify for permanent residency. Both the students and the college knew that. Students have lost their money. Its time the college is also made to pay. Indian govt must NOT allow remittance of foreign exchange from India for any such frivolous course, especially to Australia, hereafter.

this should be an eye opener for the indian govt, minister of hr, who is preparing the country to invite foreign universities to set up their universties in india. if the quality of these university curriculum is as expressed by a student in this article, we must very well think twice before inviting foreign universities.
