Kolkata, June 2 With the websites of some of the leading colleges of the Calcutta University going haywire on the first day of admissions, students had to wait in long queues for hours to collect admission forms from the colleges.

According to students, the websites of colleges such as Bethune College, Heramba Chandra College and others stopped working for a few hours in the morning and as a result, they could not download admission forms.

The Principal of Ashutosh College, Debobrata Choudhury, said that in spite of going online, students from rural areas came to the colleges to take admission forms.

“Even though we have online form distribution system in place, there is an inherent tendency of students to visit colleges and collect forms in person. Besides online admission forms, the college has sold about 5,000 forms today,” he said. Long queues were also seen at Presidency College. Lady Brabourne had made arrangements to deposit the admission form fee in a bank.

Meanwhile, St Xavier’s and Lady Brabourne College have decided to accept only online admission forms.

Colleges are also coming up with an extended list after the joint entrance test results are declared. “We have sold a record number of forms this year, the number has just doubled from the last year,” said Sanghamitra Mukherjee, principal of Lady Brabourne College.

“We have to extend the merit list and take more students this year,” she said. Principal of Ashutosh College also showed his concern on the issue. “We have to come with an extended list after 15 days. Admissions of students will be cancelled if they fail to attend the college for the first 15 days,” he said.
