Yajiang, China, March 19: Chinese security forces have blocked foreigners from entering ethnic Tibetan areas of remote western China, amid reports of anti-government protests spreading to Tibet's neighbouring provinces.

China has been grappling to quell unrest in several Tibetan towns and villages in the country's west, after Buddhist monk-led demonstrations in Tibet's capital Lhasa turned violent on Friday.

The government in recent days has asked foreigners in Tibet to leave and has suspended approving travel permits to the Himalayan region. Media watchdogs have reported that authorities have expelled journalists reporting there.

Foreigners travelling in western Sichuan province were taken off a public bus at a police check-point at Yajiang, a village on a major highway leading to Lhasa, and sent on a mini-bus to Kangding, a city further east.

"It is closed to all foreigners and tourists. There is nothing to see now, but you're welcome to come back some other time," a police officer at the check-point in Yajiang said.

When asked for a reason, the officer said: "It's not safe."

"The hotels are closed, the restaurants are closed, there is nothing going on," another police officer said.

"The further you go in that direction (west), the greater the difficulties," she said.

Yajiang lies on the route to Lithang, a town of about 40,000 people, where troops had surrounded a local monastery and Tibetans had been arrested, a resident said.

A Reuters correspondent in Sichuan said an army camp had been set up en route to the ethnic Tibetan town and saw convoys carrying troops driving west towards Tibet.

The authorities have said Lhasa was returning to normal but overseas groups have reported protests and heavy police presence in western Gansu province's ethnic Tibetan towns of Xiahe and Gannan.

The Tibetan government-in-exile says 99 people died when Chinese security forces moved to quell last week's rioting. The government puts the death toll at 13.

Wary that images of civil unrest and violence could tarnish China's image ahead of the Olympic Games in August, the government has clamped down on news reporting in its restive western region.

Reporters in Lhasa and three other Chinese cities have been blocked from reporting in 30 separate incidents, including being tailed by authorities and having footage confiscated, the Foreign Correspondents Club of China said in a statement.

THE DEATH NELL OF BIJING'S DESPOTS by S.Rameswaran on 20 Mar 2008

The unconquerable spirit of Tibetans’ to restore the full territorial sovereignty and independence of their country to live, as free citizens cannot be suppressed forever by the military might of Beijing’s communist regime. His Holiness The Dalai Lama is the spiritual and temporal Head of State of Tibet in exile who has the staunch allegiance of the Tibetan people: the communist leadership of China must recognize this fact without delay and restore Tibet’s rightful place in the comity of nations as a sovereign nation. China will face the ferocious wrath and awesome actions of civilized world if it fails to end its barbarous colonialism in Tibet and elsewhere in the territories under its control, designs to occupy the territories of the neighbouring countries and clandestine and terror activities around the world with the complicity of despotic regimes in the region and beyond. Great Chinese dynasties and empires of the past vanished as time moved on and the current rebellions against Beijing is the beginning of the end of the communist barbarians to give birth a new era and freedom to the oppressed people of China.

Save both India and Tibet from Genocide, oh Dalai Lama else we would be bygones native indians/Ameri by Jake on 19 Mar 2008

How many Indians want to wear Indian dress? All the movie actors are shy of wearing Indian dress. Atleast Tibetans try to keep some dress identity.Within India too, the awards of for Filmfare don't happen in Indian language due to hate for national language by few sections of India. The mind games, economic reality and laws of ghoras take over. India is economically incapable of banning Indians going to west or foreign countries for livelihood. Indian communists must be send to China, these traitors have no place in Bharat.

How about Indian Genocide?Dalai Lama complains about cultural Genocide by China by ds on 19 Mar 2008

Dalai Lama could be right about the rights of Tibetans. Can they Tibetans get autonomy in current situation? We wish him all the best.Hope Indian economy is capable of giving opportunity to all NRIs. Why? Dalai Lama needs to look with a global perspective. There is nothing African about African-Americans is USA except their skin colour that they cannot remove and few black rhetorics. Their lifestyles or lingo is not African.Same with Indians that live abroad, they might wear Indian dress but their ability to fight the Ghora system is fades over decades. Does Dalai Lama knows what happens to Tibetans who live in West? They have to comply with the West system or be economically out casted over time.It is not like India where they can live for centuries and still preserve their culture and infact make the mainstream learn a bit about their beliefs.

Indian cultural Genocide by ds on 19 Mar 2008

In fact the Indo-Aryans living in deeper areas of India learnt local languages in India, local cultures, religion, etc.How many Indians want to wear Indian dress? Islam and other religions proliferated all the way to Malaysia/Indonesia, it makes it easier for some to proliferate/accepted on basis of religion though Arabs have lesser need to emigrate due to being better off than the South-Asians.Neither Bobby Jindal or Obama profess their original faith at birth. Seems like even India could be heading that way unless there is spurt of some innovative thinking that give economic boost and something that joins all Indians.Aghaar Obama American hoo ghyaa thoo kyaa Africa Americanize hoo jhayeega.
