While the proposal for the construction of one such parking behind the Sahib Singh parking has already been allotted to a contractor, the Administration is yet to earmark the land for another such project in Sector 17-B.
In a letter written to the Municipal Corporation Chief Engineer, the UT Chief Architect has communicated that the Administration has taken the decision to convert plot number 16 adjacent to Hotel Shivalikview in Sector 17 into a multi-level parking with basement.
Surprisingly, the Corporation has decided to close down two parking sites, including one in front of the Empire Store and another in front of the Trendsetters, in Sector 17, where at present 650 vehicles are being parked. Earlier, many of the councillors, including the present Mayor, Pardeep Chhabra, had opposed the move to close down these two parking lots. The two are being scrapped for constructing food kiosks and creating green space.
Mayor Pardeep Chhabra said the issue of closing two parking lots for the construction of food kiosks and green area will be discussed in the next House meeting. He said parking was more important as the construction of multi-level parking for 1,200 vehicles after the closure of parking for 650 vehicles will not solve the problem.
Meanwhile, the officials maintained that the decision to close the two parking lots was taken to bring Sector 17 at par with international markets. The officials said that green space with sitting arrangements and food kiosks add to the beauty of the area.
“At surface parking lots, parking fee is charged for the day due to which hundreds of vehicles remain parked for hours together. But in the multi-level parking lot fee will be charged on an hourly basis which will discourage idle parking of vehicles. Once the multi-level parking comes up, the parking problem will be reduced to a great extent,” said the officials.
