As the news spread, members of a community killed a 47-year-old labourer who was on his way to work. Enraged by this, two persons were fatally attacked in retaliation by members of the other community, police said adding the victims were aged 12 and 25.
The police resorted to lathicharge and lobbed teargas shells to disperse the clashing mobs.
Even as the city was gripped by tension, a group of people brought the body of the 12-year-old boy to the Udayagiri police station alleging he was killed in police firing.
Police, however, disputed this saying the victim was stabbed to death.
As the crowd refused to accept their version, the police agreed to their demand for a post mortem by a three-member team of doctors to ascertain the cause of death.
Deputy Commissioner P Manivannan and City Police Commissioner Sunil Agarwal visited the violence-hit areas where shops and business establishments were closed.
As a precautionary measure, prohibitory orders under Section 144 Cr.PC were clamped.
In Bangalore, Home Minister V S Acharya told reporters that central security forces stationed in Coimbatore had been summoned to Mysore where the situation was tense.
Besides resorting to lathi-charge and bursting of teargas shells, police used rubber bullets to disperse the crowd, Acharya said.
Police have made tight security arrangements and the situation is "seemingly peaceful", Acharya said. The Minister blamed "difference of opinion" for the clashes.

What civilised world is Mr.Radhakrishnan talking about?Perphaps you are not affected since u r sitting in melbourne.Media is biased
People like Ashraf have come from different land might be during Mughal rule. Please kick them out of our nation.Only then we can rest in peace.
Taalibaan, Al Quaida , Mujahideen ans numerous terror groups are born from it. Where ever there are the followers of the "peaceful religion" there is trouble globally. But in the end they say that it is religion of peace.(Pls dont argue..read History)Be it India, Bangladesh,Pakistan,Middle East or other parts of the world...these are the people creating trouble. I think its the menatlity and the habit rather than the issues which give birth to controvercies , troubles and violence. Our corrupt secularists (read opportunistic leaders) try to take mileage out of it. I think all get the message..I do not need to name any one.
BJP rule is a boon for khardimag communals. And they may have a desire for Modi formula of cementing their rule.Let the forces of peace and harmony act unitedly and timely. One can easily realize from their(these so called defenders of hindus)language and tone how much poison is injected in their minds and to what mischief they are up to.Let it be nipped in the bud.
When temples were destroyed nobody reported and when hindus retaliate it is brteaking news...What an IDEA Seculars? Good Great Going...
Mr.Rao, Perhaps U should mind your words. What Indian express is doing is Dharma. U are expecting adharma by asking the media to mention the name of the communities. Please come to civilized world.
It seems biggest attackers to our state are hiding behind our religious sentiments. How are the people going to pay the cost of such disturbances?
Why is the press hesitant to write the names of both the communities? It is is Muslin/Hindu/Christian let them say it instead of giving two communities and hint at Madarasa etc. Have B*lls to write the truth. The issue could have been a small one but now politicians will try to stir up problems
if this is conspiracy i am surprised why only in BJP state and why only minority get victim; no i am not fan of any party; there is no smoke without fire.AshrafBangalore
Sir, The manner of this communal disturbance smacks of a conspiracy to destblise the BJP govt. in Karnataka. This should be crushed with an iron hand. This may be a with an eye on the assembly elections in neighbouring Maharashtra in 3-4 months. BJP should be cautious.
